Connect to an external data source
- [Instructor] Excel lets you build PivotTables from data found both inside and outside the workbook where you create the PivotTable. If you want to build a PivotTable from a data source that you either can't or don't want to import into Excel directly, you can create its connection to that data source and work with it in place. I'll demonstrate how to do that in this movie. And I'll start in the sample file named 01_06_ExternalData, and you can find that in the chapter one folder of the Exercise Files collection. And yes, this is a blank workbook, but I wanted to give you something to work with instead of having to create your own. From here, go to the Insert tab of the ribbon and then click the PivotTable button's down arrow, and then click From External Source.
