- True story. My first day as the HR director, the chief operations officer thanked me for something I helped him with and gave me a big hug. For me, that was crossing a line. For him, it was a show of deep gratitude and appreciation for my work. This is the challenge for HR pros. We have to understand employee cultural differences because those differences may cause misunderstandings as it did for me and the COO. We use cultural theories to help us understand ourselves and the workforce we support, and there are four potential obstacles to cultural understanding we need to be aware of. The first is ethnocentrism and parochialism. This is when employees judge other cultures by the norms of their own culture. Cultural stereotypes refers to ascribing an aspect of a group's culture to all members of that group. Cultural determinism is when a person's culture is used to excuse their behavior.
