- [Instructor] A key component of privacy is data. Data can do many things, identify the users whose data it is, describe the behavior and preferences of those users, help build products that are attractive for those users. However, data can become a liability if you fail to correctly protect it, and that is why data classification is so important. Data classification is a process of sorting and ranking data based on privacy risk. When you start the classification process, you need to ask some questions about the data. What sort of data is this in terms of volume and definition? Why do we need to collect it? Why do we need to collect so much off it? What does this data tell us about our customers and our businesses? What would happen if this data were to be mishandled? In order for the classification to be practical and useful, consider how you use the data before you classify it.
