How to capture and validate skills
- One of the most common questions I receive is how to capture the skills data in the system and keep them updated. The best option that makes analyzing data easy is to save skills in the HRIS or HCM. Can you use spreadsheets to capture and save the data? Of course, but spreadsheets are not a database, which can lead to some issues. If you allow multiple people to enter the skills data, you can run into consistent issues or version control problems. It is also more difficult to tie the data to other employee data points such as tenure, manager hierarchy, location and so on. Finally, you may very well have sensitive data that are not appropriate to be stored on the same spreadsheet, so you will need to combine two sets of data every time you need an analysis.
