- Thanks to hyperconnectivity, online shopping, remote work, virtual meetings and cloud computing, we have seen exponential growth in data usage and high demand for data centers. But here is something you may not have considered. Servers generate a lot of heat. Cooling millions of them can account for nearly a third of the power usage by data centers. And while traditional best practices such as the use of computational fluid dynamics, hot air containment, reducing water usage and extensive monitoring help, Google and others wondered whether machine learning could help further cool data centers and reduce energy consumption. According to Google, a data center has chillers, cooling towers, water pumps, heat exchangers and control systems, each with its own settings and all interacting in intricate, nonlinear and often counterintuitive ways.
