“I had the great pleasure of working with Michael for 4 years at Aetna. During that time, few people inspired a larger portion of the company, myself included, with a never ending commitment to their work than Michael. He is a consummate leader, driven by a passion to change the world with the work that he does and the personal mission that is the drum beat of his life. It was incredible to watch him build teams, products, technologies while navigating at the most senior levels of the organization to procure support for each important initiative. Michael has a unique ability to always remain positive and find a way to get hard things done. When a door closes in front of Michael, he has an uncanny knack for finding a window and, when one is not open, breaking down walls. I know Michael has broken down professional barriers his entire career and will continue to do so in pursuit of building a better world. Wherever Michael leads next, he will be successful, as will all that work for and with him. ”

Aetna realizes significant employee healthcare savings using Newtopia's personalized disease prevention platform. The randomized controlled trial, which studied employees at increased risk for Metabolic Syndrome, showed yearly cost savings of $1,464 per participant in the Newtopia participant group versus a randomized control group. Strong patient engagement was achieved - 76% of participants lost 5% of their body weight (average 10 pounds) and kept it off for over two years.

Aetna recently conducted a pilot program that encouraged Medicare members in Maine to practice Tai Chi. In the program’s first year, participants reported about 20 percent fewer falls and a 20 percent reduction in anxiety about falls, when compared with a control group. People who took the class twice a week reported the most improvement and were most satisfied.
