The first ARACHNE Parallel Project, a variant of the Broad Institute's ARACHNE Project, was originally designed to do efficient Genomic Assembly leveraging distributed computing techniques across a grid of low cost compute nodes. ARACHNE Parallel was originally built on a four node TruCluster Server system. It was later migrated to a multinode RHEL/Fedora system leveraging GFS. Code related to the basic Genomic Assembly system was contributed back to the Broad Institute through a series of third parties in academia. The basic compute grid of ARACHNE Parallel was kept separate from the base code.

ARACHNE-2 is based on ARACHNE Parallel's compute grid infrastructure and is based on Pthread and OpenMPI principals, along with experience gleaned from DEC's AltaVista Search Project. It is currently used for data mining and research purposes on the Internet, Intranet, and other secondary networks. Complex Event Processing and a Correlation Engine was also incorporated in 2006.

ARACHNE-3 leverages the ARACHNE-2 architecture. ARACHNE-3 now leverages CPU-GPU compute nodes, as well as, nodes in the Cloud. Components of the Apache Hadoop stack were also integrated into it in 2010 and by the end of 2012, a low layer foundation developed in CUDA was put in place for easier updatability when the Apache Hadoop stack changes. Also in 2011, R was integrated into the system to allow for the development and application of different type of analytical techniques so analytical experimentation can be done quickly.

The system is designed using the latest web technology and is an amalgamation over over 12 different data sources including the National BSA's Scout.Net system.

MERLN II is a follow-on that takes the MERLN system into the Cloud. It leverages NoSQL and Lucene technology along with providing information through the use of browser, iOS, and Android clients and is expected to be rolled out in Sept. 2013.

Access to MERLN is restricted to authorized personnel from the SFBAC of the BSA.

  • Future Fantasy (FF) Online Bookstore Project

    -

As a member of the software development team and in conjunction with the research team at DEC’s Western Research Lab in Palo Alto, CA developed a technology proof of concept to make a local bookstore’s (Future Fantasy Bookstore) inventory available for purchase on the Web. This was highly successful more than doubling the bookstore's business within just a couple of weeks of going online. This was probably one of the first bookstores to have online sales and pre-dates Amazon.com.
