Founded in 1984, the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona, CA is one of five animal care centers in the country operated by the Humane Society of the United States. Since its inception, the 13 acre facility has provided year-round medical and rehabilitative care to ill, injured or orphaned predatory species of wildlife including eagles, raptors, bobcats, cougars and coyotes with the goal of releasing them back into the wild. Licensed as a “wildlife shelter,” the FFA Wildlife Center also serves as a sanctuary for native and non-native wild animal victims of the exotic pet trade or other acts of cruelty who cannot be returned to the wild.

A fully equipped medical center, trained staff and volunteers insure that the special needs of the ill, injured, or orphaned wildlife can be met year-round. Animals injured in the wild are kept at the sanctuary until they recuperate and can be released into the areas from which they came. Young, injured animals are raised wild—with minimal human interaction—so they develop skills necessary for their future survival. Our wildlife specialists use their extensive knowledge, experience and patience to carefully balance the hands-on work with keeping the animals from becoming reliant on humans, which would prevent a successful return to the wild. Once the animals have gained strength, health and basic survival skills, they are ready for release into the wild -- always our goal, whenever possible. The FFA Wildlife Center rehabilitates nearly 500 animals each year.

While the rehabilitative care is ongoing, FFA Wildlife Center staff and volunteers also maintain the center’s 20 resident animals, many of whom were used by people to turn profits for entertainment in the exotic pet trade. Because these animals were born in captivity and/or raised by humans, these resident animals could not be returned to the wild and, therefore, must live in sanctuary at the center.
