“I worked very closely with Bali and the Pricing Team as the retail Stakeholder from the start up (2005-2011) of a very visible product development project – that being how we automate our prices across millions of products to offer low prices for our customers (a core tenet). Additionally the tool must be simple and error free for the users (buyers). It may sound simple- but it is highly complex. Amazon is a plethora of disparate businesses (Books, Electronics, Groceries, Clothes), with varied product lifecycles/availability/profitability, vendor pricing policies that spans many countries. I observed Bali develop quickly from a quiet, super smart, highly analytical and personable tactical engineer into a passionate leader/director. He was able to increase buyer productivity extremely fast within a very lean and ambiguous environment. He embraced his more strategic/leadership role quickly and without losing the ability to get his hands dirty was able to lead the team to scale and improve to tool. We spent countless lunches together outside of our normal stakeholder meetings discussing the roadmap/automation and the continuous improvement needs of the tool. Bali’s desire to dig deep and understand why retail needed some specific requirements made him a better leader (this trait is not found in all tech leaders). I have always respected and solicited Bali’s opinion when tackling the latest pricing issue. I found myself on numerous occasions saying, “Why didn’t I think of it that way” when working with Bali. Much of the success of Amazon’s retail business can be attributed to the leadership of Bali and the Pricing Team.”
