What is a Field Medical Affairs recruiter or Hiring Manager looking at when reviewing your MSL resume? A few key things: ↳ Where you live – MSLs travel frequently (think trains, planes, automobiles!). Hiring Managers tend to look for major markets and accessibility to a nearby major airport. ↳ Therapeutic expertise – MSLs function as scientific experts. Often, recruiters and Hiring Managers will look to see how closely your background aligns with their role therapeutically – it is critical to include ample detail about your therapeutic expertise, so there are no questions (and no hesitation in contacting you!!!) when your resume is under review. ↳ Territory – MSLs are valuable for many key reasons, but one of their main “draws" is the relationships they bring to the table within a specific geography. Hiring Managers like to see which territories (exact states) you have managed and developed KOL and HCP relationships in. ↳ Tenure at Organizations – This is tricky, as people are far, far, FAR more than a piece of paper. However, Hiring Managers usually observe work history and how long MSLs have worked at respective companies. If they have jumped frequently and quickly year over year, it can throw up a flag. This should be taken with a grain of salt, as there is usually a story as to why – i.e. pre-commercial companies inherently carry more risk, and pharma in general is a rollercoaster ride contingent on science, trials, etc. ↳ Typos – Yes, typos do matter! Typos can reflect how much time and effort you put into your resume work. Believe it or not, I have seen products, disease states, company names, and major academic centers (i.e. Johns Hopkins) misspelled. If you can’t stand grammar and words, find a friend to proofread your document! Wishing you great success from The Carolan Group, ALWAYS!!!

“It’s just business… it’s not personal.” I always struggled with this concept (still do). Tom Caravela and I talk about it all the time. Back when I worked in retail at J.Crew, I could not help but bond with my customers. You get to know people’s names, backgrounds, stories, kids, struggles – the list goes on. It’s been the same for me in Medical Affairs. The people I have met have so deeply inspired me and have changed my life. And specifically, I have met so many strong, brilliant women that I aspire to be like! (Deanna Tucker and Julie Chen, Pharm.D., BCPS are perfect examples!). I understand the divide between business and personal… But I think to do great business, you have to be a person and human first. Thank you to all the WONDERFUL Medical Affairs individuals who have let me join their network, pick their brain, collaborate on projects and open positions, or just get to know you on a professional AND personal level. You have given my career tremendous color and meaning! The Carolan Group

Amazing that LinkedIn connections can become FRIENDS! I originally met Josh Yoder back in 2017, about 6 months into my new job as a recruiter at The Carolan Group. I was super green, but Josh was kind enough to take my call. Immediately, I was struck by A) how smart he was and B) how incredibly positive and genuine he was. Fast forward to 2025, and we are still pals and keep connected. We run into each other at conferences (pictured here at MASS West – shout-out to the Fierce Pharma team for always bringing people together!!!). → We always laugh. → We chat it up about miscellaneous (sports, wellness, you name it!). → And we ALWAYS boomerang back to our mutual philosophy of positivity. Stumbling on this photo in my photo library is a moving reminder to me to always be open-minded about meeting new people, making meaningful connections, and utilizing the full power of LinkedIn. It’ll enhance your life – and make your professional career and journey so significantly brighter and better, as my pal Josh has done for me! And if you haven’t done so already, check out his recent MSL Talk podcast episode with Tom Caravela & Kirsten Borbe, MD!!! Talk about amazing connections and an AMAZING story! #MedicalAffairsFriends #TheCarolanGroup #JoshRocks

There is a Carolan Group Post-It thief in my house… And it’s my Mom! Baking pies! I have been working at The Carolan Group for almost 9 years now. Cliché but true, my team has basically become an extension of my family (Tom Caravela is totally my work Dad). And The Carolan Group has CLEARLY become part of mine! We spend so much time at our jobs. We can’t deny the influence: ↳ On average, 40 hours per week. ↳ 52 weeks a year. ↳ 2,080 hours spent with your team. It is important to find people that uplift you and treat you kindly. It is important to find a team culture that resonates. It is important to find people that see you and believe in you. The Carolan Group has changed my professional and personal life – the two are interwoven. I am so grateful. And Tom, I’m going to need more Post-Its!!!!!!!!!! #TheCarolanGroup #WorkCulture #Grateful
