What is a Field Medical Affairs recruiter or Hiring Manager looking at when reviewing your MSL resume? A few key things: ↳ Where you live – MSLs travel frequently (think trains, planes, automobiles!). Hiring Managers tend to look for major markets and accessibility to a nearby major airport. ↳ Therapeutic expertise – MSLs function as scientific experts. Often, recruiters and Hiring Managers will look to see how closely your background aligns with their role therapeutically – it is critical to include ample detail about your therapeutic expertise, so there are no questions (and no hesitation in contacting you!!!) when your resume is under review. ↳ Territory – MSLs are valuable for many key reasons, but one of their main “draws" is the relationships they bring to the table within a specific geography. Hiring Managers like to see which territories (exact states) you have managed and developed KOL and HCP relationships in. ↳ Tenure at Organizations – This is tricky, as people are far, far, FAR more than a piece of paper. However, Hiring Managers usually observe work history and how long MSLs have worked at respective companies. If they have jumped frequently and quickly year over year, it can throw up a flag. This should be taken with a grain of salt, as there is usually a story as to why – i.e. pre-commercial companies inherently carry more risk, and pharma in general is a rollercoaster ride contingent on science, trials, etc. ↳ Typos – Yes, typos do matter! Typos can reflect how much time and effort you put into your resume work. Believe it or not, I have seen products, disease states, company names, and major academic centers (i.e. Johns Hopkins) misspelled. If you can’t stand grammar and words, find a friend to proofread your document! Wishing you great success from The Carolan Group, ALWAYS!!!
