Last Tuesday, the Smart Container Alliance held its very first General Assembly inside the World Customs Organization (WCO) headquarters in Brussels. This has been a great opportunity to have a meaningful discussion regarding the growing importance of smart containers in the fight against illicit trafficking, especially regarding their recognition and inclusion in customs lists. We were especially happy to have an insightful presentation from Gerhard Retief and David Zeine from the WCO, covering: 🔹 The UNODC-WCO/PCCP’s interest in the evolution of smart containers ; 🔹 The added value of customs-collected data in improving smart solutions ; 🔹 How customs authorities perceive the role of smart containers ; 🔹 The strategic role of the Alliance in promoting smarts containers to ensure a more secure and resilient international supply chain ; Finally, the meeting also served as a first groundwork for preparing our next collaboration with the WCO, scheduled for September 2025. A big thank you to all our members and WCO colleagues who made this day such a success !🚀 #SmartContainers #CustomsInnovation #SupplyChain #WCO #DigitalLogistics #TradeFacilitation #SmartContainerAlliance #Brussels

Cargo theft on the rise: Insights from TT Club's latest security bulletin Cargo theft and drug smuggling are escalating threats in the global supply chain, with TT Club reporting a significant uptick in theft claims year-over-year. Why is this happening? The increasing complexity of trade routes and vessel-sharing agreements Anonymity of containers, making them ideal for illicit activities Fragmented governance structures within the shipping industry What can be done? Smart containers, equipped with real-time tracking and intrusion detection, offer a promising solution. These innovations enable faster response times, better risk management, and improved law enforcement collaboration. As cargo security risks evolve, so must our approach. Technology, data-driven insights, and strategic investment in security solutions will be key to mitigating these threats.
