Enabling organizations to take swift climate action by setting ambitious emissions reduction targets.

About us

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. We develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest. The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host our target validation services. Our partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

  • Pilot test the draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2! In the next phase of development of the Standard, we’re inviting companies to trial the draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2. This is a unique opportunity for companies to directly influence how the world’s leading corporate climate standard evolves. The pilot will be conducted in two phases: - Phase 1  A survey open to companies across all sectors and regions to gather essential input to further refine the draft Standard. It will also gauge interest in participating in Phase Two of the pilot. - Phase 2:  A hands-on trial with the selected companies using real-world data to test a near-final version of the draft Standard, or specific components of it. This phase aims to identify any implementation challenges, validate key methodological assumptions, and gather in-depth feedback to help inform the final Standard. The pilot—open to corporations of all sizes and locations—is a critical step in gathering evidence to ensure that the flagship Standard is not only scientifically robust, but also practical for businesses. The pilot test survey will be open from Monday, June 16 to Friday, August 15, 2025. Head over to our website to learn more and complete the survey: https://lnkd.in/eTcSJ9c7 #NetZeroStandard #NetZero #SBTi #ScienceBasedTargets

  • “Companies have also told me that the SBTi is the gold standard for corporate net-zero alignment around which the system has developed, and that the approach must be further developed as we move to the next phase of the net-zero transition.” -David Kennedy, SBTi CEO Looking back at his first 90 days at the SBTi, CEO David Kennedy shares what he’s heard from companies around the world, the strong business case for climate action, and how the SBTi is evolving to support the next phase of the net-zero transition. David makes it clear that, looking ahead, we will focus even more on action and implementation. This means helping companies not only set ambitious targets, but implement and achieve them. CEO, Science Based Targets initiative

My first 90 days at the Science Based Targets initiative have been a wonderful experience. I've loved meeting our passionate, professional and expert team; I've been impressed with the progress in establishing a well-functioning organisation, since becoming independent from our founders last year; and I've been particularly pleased to see customer service improvements through increasing capacity, streamlining processes and developing a digital customer interface for target validation, the Validation Portal. Externally, I was overwhelmed on my 3rd day when at the #WBCSD annual meeting in Montreux, everybody wanted to hear the direction of travel for SBTi under my leadership! Since then I have spoken to many corporates across sectors and geographies. They consistently say the business case for action remains strong, as shown in the number of companies submitting targets for validation: submissions in 2024 increased 100% on 2023; those in the first five months of 2025 were up 30% on the same period in 2024. Companies have also told me that the SBTi is the gold standard for corporate net-zero alignment around which the system has developed, and that the approach must be further developed as we move to the next phase of the #netzero transition. We will evolve our approach to focus increasingly on action and implementation. This means standards which include options for decarbonisation actions; and supporting companies beyond setting targets, for example, through identifying barriers to progress and how these might be addressed. To be pragmatic, while remaining science-based, we will: - develop standards that better reflect the circumstances of different companies - focus on things companies can do to reduce emissions, rather than those that are beyond their control - cover only categories of emissions which are material, and - continue to engage with companies that are making meaningful progress reducing their emissions. We will listen and engage: working closely with business to gain deep understanding of their challenges, so that we can better translate our approaches to commercial contexts; and we'll play a leading role with partner organisations. Our draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard Version 2 marks a big step forward in these respects: it is action-oriented and pragmatic, and we are engaging widely about its development. We are now carefully considering nearly 1,000 responses to its first public consultation, and working through key topics with five expert working groups. The next draft will be available in Q4 for a short second consultation. We are also updating our Theory of Change, which will be the foundation for a new strategy to be published no later than early next year. I want to thank everyone inside and outside the #SBTi for their support, and express my confidence and determination that we will have a huge impact as we drive towards transforming businesses and achieving our climate objectives.

  • What is the difference between a near-term and a net-zero science-based target—and how do they work together? Near-term targets are the foundation of corporate climate action. They drive immediate action, setting clear emissions reduction goals over the next 5–10 years. Net-zero targets add long-term ambition—requiring a 90%+ reduction in emissions across the value chain by 2050, and neutralizing what’s left with permanent removals. Together, they reflect a comprehensive and credible approach to emissions reductions—one that balances urgency with long-term vision. • Our target dashboard has been updated! There are now more than 8,416 organizations with validated science-based targets, and over 11,066 with targets or commitments to set them. Congratulations to all of these organizations for their commitment to robust, credible action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions! • WWF International, one of our founding partners, just released a report highlighting the impact of its Forests Forward program, an initiative that works with companies around the world to help reduce their forest footprint and support other on-the-ground actions to keep forests thriving for people, nature, and climate. Through Forests Forward: - Projects supported by private sector partners are helping conserve 1.3 million hectares of forests. - Another 2.7 million hectares of tropical forest are benefiting from improved forest management practices. This kind of voluntary corporate action plays a vital role in tackling the impacts of the climate crisis and delivering on Forest, Land, and Agriculture (FLAG) science-based targets. As outlined in our FLAG Guidance, companies in this sector must commit to eliminating deforestation across all scopes by December 31, 2025 – a critical step toward nature-positive, climate-resilient business. Learn more about the our no-deforestation requirements and why they matter in this blog: https://lnkd.in/e2csYZh8 Read WWF’s Forest Forward Impact Report here: https://lnkd.in/etEkySYr #ScienceBasedTargets #FLAG #Deforestation #WWF #ForestsForward #ClimateAction

  • Curious about the potential role of carbon credits in SBTi’s draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2? Our latest blog dives into the topic of carbon credits, and their potential use cases within the draft Standard. The draft Standard proposes ways in which high-quality carbon credits can support corporate net-zero target setting in a way that complements, rather than substitutes, the decarbonization of operations and value chains. As we are continuing to evolve the draft Standard, we encourage all stakeholders to engage in the development process. • The Luxembourg Stock Exchange has launched its Transition Finance Gateway, a new initiative to support organizations that issue sustainable or green bonds in navigating the path to net-zero—and we are proud to be one of four key data providers powering this work. The Gateway brings visibility to over 500+ non-financial corporate debt issuers, offering investors and stakeholders greater transparency on companies’ climate ambitions. SBTi Chief Impact Officer Tracy Wyman on this new initiative:  “The launch of LuxSE’s Transition Finance Gateway is a major step forward in increasing transparency and accountability in climate finance. It helps global stakeholders understand the level of climate ambition in the financial sector and track progress toward meaningful action. This insight can guide smarter investments and support a more resilient, net-zero future,” In a recent interview with LuxSE, we explained: - How our climate data helps issuers build trust and attract investment. - Why credible targets are foundational for financing the net-zero transition. - How investors can use our data to assess climate risk and opportunity.
