🛰️ What do a Cold War satellite and modern GPS have in common? In 1957, scientists observed a subtle shift in Sputnik’s radio signal as it orbited Earth. That Doppler shift—caused by the satellite moving closer and farther from the ground—became the foundation of a revolutionary concept. By 1958, ARPA and Johns Hopkins University APL used this principle to develop Transit, the world’s first global satellite navigation system. 🚀 The first Transit satellite launched in 1960, delivering accurate navigation to military and commercial users—including the U.S. Navy’s missile submarines. Transit operated for 28 years until 1996, when it was replaced by today’s Global Positioning System (GPS).
