For Jaime Franti, a quality manager at Baron Industries based in Madison Heights, MI, being an LGBTQIA+ ally means defending the rights and privileges of everyone to the best of her ability, as well as working on her own personal shortcomings and not using them as an excuse when she makes a misstep. As a mom, Jaime is passing these lessons of allyship on to her son. “It is a difficult world to raise a child in right now, but I am proud to say that he has integrity, kindness, and is caring of others. He makes me optimistic for his generation and what they will be able to accomplish in this world.” She hopes her son and others – young and old – will continue to promote a culture of nurturing and acceptance and celebrate family and friends in the community.

A quality manager at Baron Industries based in Madison Heights, MI, Jaime Franti, who has been a staunch LGBTQIA+ ally for as long as she can remember, talks about the power of allyship. Jaime grew up surrounded by a diverse group of people, including several members of the LGBTQIA+ community. More recently, a close friend came out to her as trans non-binary, which cemented her allyship. “That really affected me because I felt proud that I was a safe space for them to [come out], but it also really woke me up to wanting to be more vocal about being an ally so that I could also potentially be that safe space for others.” One of the biggest lessons Jaime learned on her journey to becoming an ally has been to educate herself by engaging in conversations. “Ask questions and remain open to hearing that the person you are asking may not have the space to teach you at that moment,” said Jaime. “Speak up for others, even if you are afraid you might not have all the right answers. And when someone tells you who they are, listen and believe them.”

Amy Miller, operations manager - manufacturing for Middletown/Dayton Operations, admires her twin sister for her many strengths, but she is a role model in her own right, helping others see beyond all-too-common LGBTQIA+ stereotypes: “Members of the LGBTQIA+ community can be stereotyped as ‘flamboyant’ or ‘butch,’ but this isn’t a true representation of the whole community. As someone who is straight passing, I think the biggest way I support and advocate for LGBTQIA+ individuals is just to bring awareness that being gay or queer doesn’t mean you look or present yourself in a specific manner.”

Amy Miller, operations manager - manufacturing for Middletown/Dayton Operations, talks about how important it is to help others grow in their allyship of the LGBTQIA+ community. “The moments that mean the most to me are when a coworker will share that they have a family member or friend who just came out and they ask questions to better understand our community and consequently what their family or friend is going through. Often people are afraid that if they ask questions, they may appear unsupportive to their family member or friend. So, they’re more comfortable speaking to a coworker or someone else in the community.”
