The Obesity Care Advocacy Network (OCAN) is excited to see the reintroduction of the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA) in both the U.S. House and Senate. Expanding coverage to obesity treatment is vital in ensuring obesity is treated as the chronic disease it is. First introduced in 2013, TROA has consistently generated bipartisan support, reflecting a growing consensus among policymakers on the need to address the nation’s obesity epidemic. According to OCAN polling released earlier this year, modernizing Medicare policy by removing outdated barriers to care is supported by a majority of Americans—including 82 percent of Republicans and 74 percent of Democrats. Expanding Medicare coverage and access to intensive behavioral therapy (IBT) will be key to making America healthy and addressing the nation’s chronic disease crisis. We urge Congress to prioritize obesity as a public health crisis and to swiftly pass TROA: https://bit.ly/4kxBPFw

In a recent article in the DC Journal by InsideSources, OMA Executive Director Teresa Fraker, FACHE, RN, CPHQ, CBN, FASMBS-IH, CAE explores how GLP-1 medications are transforming obesity care. However, despite their promise, access to these treatments is still out of reach for many due to high costs and restrictive insurance coverage. Teresa emphasizes that obesity is a chronic medical condition, not a personal failing. She highlights the urgent need to remove barriers and expand access to equitable, evidence-based care for all individuals who need it.
