The World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS), founded in 1960 by prominent thinkers like Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer, is dedicated to addressing pressing global challenges through interdisciplinary dialogue. Introducing Mahmood Hassan, a remarkable first-generation student at our partner college, University of Missouri-Kansas City; and member of our 2025 First Gen class. Born in Boulder, Colorado, Mahmood excelled academically from a young age, advancing through Algebra and skipping grades, while also being actively involved in community service. Despite facing significant mental health challenges, Mahmood has channeled his experiences into a desire to uplift others. He emphasizes authenticity and the connection between personal and professional growth. His journey reflects resilience and the impactful role of community support, underscoring that true success often stems from overcoming adversity. Alexander Hamilton was a key figure in early American history, instrumental in shaping the U.S. Constitution and establishing the nation’s financial system. Orphaned in the West Indies, he rose to prominence as an aide to General George Washington and became a leading advocate for a strong central government. As the first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton tackled national debt by consolidating state debts, creating the First Bank of the United States, and implementing a tax and tariff system, stabilizing the economy and enhancing America's global standing. While his policies sometimes fueled regional and class tensions, Hamilton's vision for governance profoundly influenced American institutions and the structure of democracy. His legacy remains significant even after his death in a duel in 1804. Introducing Shaylan Wilson, a dedicated senior at Colorado State University Pueblo, where she is pursuing a degree in Psychology as a first-generation college student. With a strong passion for mental health and social justice, Shaylan has taken on significant leadership roles, including President of the Associated Students’ Government and President of the Tau Tau chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Her journey has been shaped by transformative experiences, such as her pivotal shift from Exercise Science to Psychology, which clarified her commitment to advocacy for BIPOC communities. Shaylan aims to earn a Ph.D. to promote mental health equity and amplify marginalized voices through storytelling. Benjamin Franklin, a Founding Father of America, was an influential inventor, diplomat, writer, and statesman. Born in Boston in 1706, he rose from humble beginnings to play a critical role in shaping the nation. He was instrumental in drafting the Declaration of Independence, securing French support during the Revolutionary War, and negotiating the Treaty of Paris. At the 1787 Constitutional Convention, his wisdom helped mediate intense debates that formed the U.S. Constitution. Franklin’s scientific contributions include demonstrating the electrical nature of lightning through his kite experiment and inventing the lightning rod, bifocal glasses, and the Franklin stove. A strong advocate for public service, he established the first public library, the University of Pennsylvania, and the first volunteer fire department. However, it’s important to recognize his complex legacy regarding slavery, as he owned enslaved people and only later advocated for abolition. Benjamin Franklin died on April 17, 1790, in Philadelphia, leaving behind a lasting legacy of innovation and service.
