This week we’re listening to The 13th Step, an investigative podcast from New Hampshire Public Radio, reported by senior journalist/producer Lauren Chooljian. The series explores the prevalence of sexual misconduct within the world of addiction recovery. It's an important topic that often flies under the radar. What is the "13th step"? It's when people with seniority or status in the recovery community exploit those who are new and vulnerable. The investigation reveals a longstanding culture of abuse in the addiction treatment system. When people seek recovery they are at one of the most vulnerable points in their lives. That vulnerability, craving connection and security, should never be exploited. Especially with how toxic today’s drug supply is, harming someone who is trying to get help is dangerous. This week's SUD Stat is 1 out 5. 1 out 5 adults with opioid addiction receive medication treatments like buprenorphine or methadone. These medications increase patient retention, relieve symptoms of withdrawal, and reduce the risk of overdose. Patients tell us again and again that buprenorphine has helped them get their life back. Whether it's employment, education or relationships, medication treatment is a stabilizing force. Despite how effective these drugs are, they remain inaccessible due to a combination of attitudinal and structural barriers. Patients tell us they encounter stigma and struggle to find providers who are willing to treat addiction.
