Your team is divided on research methodologies. How can you bridge the gap and find common ground?

When your team is split on UX (User Experience) research methodologies, finding common ground is essential for cohesive and effective results. Here’s how to bring everyone together:

  • Facilitate open discussions: Encourage team members to share their preferences and rationales to understand different perspectives.

  • Combine methodologies: Integrate elements from various methodologies to create a hybrid approach that addresses diverse viewpoints.

  • Seek external expertise: Bring in a neutral third-party expert to provide unbiased guidance and mediate differences.

How do you handle differing opinions on your team? Share your strategies.

When my team is divided on research methodologies, I encourage open discussions to understand each perspective. We explore combining elements from different methodologies to create a hybrid approach that satisfies everyone. If necessary, we bring in an external expert to provide unbiased advice and mediate differences.

Here’s how I handle it: Open Discussion: Facilitate a meeting to discuss preferred methods and reasoning, fostering mutual understanding. Align Goals: Shift focus to common objectives like user satisfaction or data accuracy. Evaluate Approaches: Objectively compare methods based on time, cost, and relevance to depersonalize the debate. Hybrid Solution: Consider a mixed approach to integrate diverse perspectives and strengthen results. Pilot & Reflect: Test methods on a small scale, gather feedback, and refine before full implementation. Document & Align: Create a research guide to ensure consistency and clarity for future projects.
Collaboration and compromise lead to solutions that best serve the team and project.

Open discussions are very important for contextualization and alignment around the objective, but they are only efficient with very clear guidance on the criteria being evaluated. I usually use Strategyzer's test cards to support the discussion when the topic is very divergent. With them, we can weigh and compare effort, reliability and results of each of the possible method possibilities.

La definición del objetivo común fortalece el desarrrollo de una metodología en equipo, si todos tenemos el mismo objetivo, a pesar de tomar caminos diferentes podemos culminarlo, la clave es identificar las fortalezas y aventurarse en pro de ello

Here is how I would approach Focusing on shared goals i.e by emphasizing the common aim of answering questions Encouraging open dialogue and letting everyone explaining their own approach Running small testing to compare methods in practice Considering practical constraints like time, resources and stakeholders needs.
