I will request them to prepare value stream map together for both the suggested process to better understand their suggested process. And ask them to prepare FMEA (Failure mode Effect Analysis) with my supervision to understand what can go wrong and process to get it corrected. By applying these 2 six sigma tools the team together will analyze and come up with best solution to go ahead. As per my experience consensus decision is always a better decision to move ahead.
