There are many modelling softwares you can use. Generally for engineers, we tend to lean towards Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, and Fusion 360. They are generally useful multi-purpose softwares in my opinion. I have friends in the space using Rhino for artistic works and it works well for them. I believe that most 3D modelling softwares allows exporting to STL file formats (this is the format used in slicer softwares for 3D printers). So, you are generally safe when selecting any random 3D modelling software as long as there is STL export as an option. Alternatively, if you are working on less known file types, you can always look for STL conversions online. Have fun and stay creative!

Sketch Up is not the best 3D CAD program to use for 3D printer files. Two water-tight shells cannot share a common surface in SketchUp. This can be worked around, but it adds more steps.

This is how I got started. I bought parts and requested the parts' 3D CAD drawings. I imported them to makerbot format and printed them. Some parts that need high precision may need varying the temperature, routing, printing speed, layer numbers, etc. Final trimming may be required after the parameters seem to be perfected. I was also using blender to make CADs. Combining simple geometries using the boolean operators was enough for my design. Using this method can us generate drawings similar to those provided by part vendors. ually

The tradeoff between cost and performance in 3D printing is that the industrial level equipment produces superior part quality with minimal variability and user involvement in processing, while results from budget friendly equipment using open source software are dependent on the ability of the operator.

The advice here is ok with consumer use of 3D printing. For industrial use, the best is to take advice from either the machine manufacturer or experimented users with the same machine. The procedure vary on the type/brand/tech of machine you are using.

Slicing is more an art that reflects the end results. so, based on the 3D printer and technology type a slicer should be chosen to customise the final results considering the factors like time, material, finishing etc.

Lower end printers are better suited to single user operation, where the printers setup, part processing, and scheduling is managed on a part by part level by a single entity.

Again, the advice given is for consumer use or small business use. In the industry, the name of such softwares is MES, there is a lot of them, with good and bad integration with industrial additive manufacturing. Again, I would interrogate your local experts (technical centers, universities, etc.) and the machine vendor. Setting up a list of requirements, a presentation and demo with various vendors can help you.
