I completely agree with this. In my interaction with Key Opinion Leaders and Healthcare Providers, I would ask them open ended questions to gain insights about a particular therapy. For example, "what do you think are the key challenges to improve patient compliance in your practice"? or" We are developing a new innovative product, how do you think it would help your patients?"

I would start by using ordinary questions as a starting point and then drilling down to more specific points. This can help to build a foundation of understanding before delving deeper into more complex topics. Probing questions are also an excellent strategy to uncover additional information and challenge one's assumptions. These types of questions can help to reveal underlying beliefs or biases that may be influencing a person's thinking. By asking probing questions, I can encourage critical thinking and expand our understanding of the topic. Overall, I believe that a combination of ordinary questions and probing questions can be an effective way to elicit critical thinking.

Questions need substance to gain the information we are trying to obtain. The beauty of conversation is that it is 2-way and should allow equal opportunity for probing. I believe communication is key to building or breaking rapport. Open-ending questions are valuable when presented appropriately.

In order to help colleagues feel included in - and not defensive from - the process of Socratic thinking, I've found that certain openers can help, such as: "I want to make sure we're on the same page about this. My understanding is [x]; I'd love to know what your starting point is." Or, "I'm going to take a minute to understand where you're coming from with this. It sounds like your end goal is [x]. Is that correct?" The Socratic questioning is really effective, made more so by ensuring everyone has the same starting point and end goal in mind.

I believe that asking questions is crucial in professional life. However, the quality of the question is just as critical as asking it. Therefore, I find philosophical approaches to questioning important. This allows us to solve both technical and communication-related issues. Looking at the root causes of many failures, I observe that necessary questions often go unasked. This applies across all aspects of life.

Critical thinking questions also work for situations where you are trying to make a decision. Use pros and cons of 2 options with the advantage and disadvantages of a solution.

Critical thinking questions are so revealing and the do not have to be difficult at all. For many years, I was the QA Director of a software company and did many interviews. One of my favorite questions was (I provided the visual to make it easier): You have a list of 8, 3 digit numbers. The total is 99. What can you tell me about the list. I originally wrote the question with an answer in mind and quickly found myself telling them there is no right or wrong answer. It's to see where your mind goes. In all the interviews I did, no one ever answered the way I originally thought they would. Oddly enough, some could not answer this question at all, even if I reminded them they were there for a QA position. That told me a lot about them.

One of the most effective frameworks for critical thinking is Cynefin. This is a mechanism that helps individuals and teams understand if a problem is Complex, Complicated, Chaotic or Clear. Based on this assessment, the questions and actions change. This can ensure that we are spending the optimal amount of energy analyzing a problem while simultaneously helping to mitigate our decision-making heuristics and biases.

An important layer to consider when using reflective questioning is the recipients relationship with their self. Listen for expressions of doubt or disparagement and assist them in interrogating whether those feelings are connected to the task itself (and outside forces that can influence it) or are internal narratives that could be causing gaps in how they collect, analyze, and make decisions with information available to them. Validating the presence and role of emotions, while maintaining focus on the goal at hand, can be a powerful tool to push through barriers and think more creatively. This can also build trust in themselves (and you) to explore biases, assumptions, and faulty thought processes further.

An unconventional way, which I find fascinating would be to become the Devil’s advocate ;). You can pretend to disagree with someone and ask them questions that show problems or other ways of looking at things. Devil’s advocate questions make people explain their ideas better and think about other opinions. Examples include “What’s wrong with your idea?”, “How would someone who thinks differently see this?”, or “What bad things could happen if you do this?”

There are two ways to do this, the good cop and the bad cop. The good cop listens. Makes the person feel seen. Nods in agreement. Pick out words or phrases used by the other party and ask for clarifications or whys. Just asking questions and showing real interest turns people into thought leaders in seconds, especially when your attention validates their intelligence and ego. On the other hand, you can play bad cop. Poke holes in their arguments. Provide better thoughts. Counter everything they say. Laugh off every point they’re trying to make. Why this is negative, it is surprising how well it works. It puts them on the defensive and make them reach deep for smarter arguments to prove they are not fools or lying. 🌴
