There are many tools and actions that can be done to ensure diversity and continuity in leadership pipeline. some of which are by simply reviewing hiring and promotion process,empployees surveys and feedback, succession planning and leadership development programs. on my top list is also promoting transparency where the organization shares progress updates with employees to demonstrate commitment in creating a diverse pipeline.

The reality is that you must start a fearless and complete leadership assessment of your organization from the very top. Is your CEO, C Suite, and Board truly committed to diversity and inclusion in the leadership pipeline?? This cannot be simply a HR initiative or a numbers tracking game. It has to be embedded in your culture, your goals, and your fundamental principles that true Diversity is good for your company and your business. With that foundation, you can do anything!!

With more success comes a higher need to deviate from your initial approach. Don't be confined by fear of failure either, identify what works well and what doesn't, ditching the things that are too much to manage at the moment, or that don't deliver the required outputs.

Like any other business strategy, plan for it! Diversity and continuity is and should be an intentional and strategic aspect to building, nurturing and growing a leadership pipeline. Define and communicate your organization's leadership culture. Be clear where diversity and various dimensions such as race, gender, industry, business, generations etc. fit into the overall leadership strategy.  What are those leadership competencies that are valued, recognized and rewarded by the organization. Intentional development and investment in leadership and sharing of leadership journies help w/ continuity  Check alignment and gaps across leadership, talent and diversity strategies. Be intentional. Communicate clearly and often.

Actively seek out diverse candidates and provide equal opportunities for all individuals to apply and be considered for leadership positions. Implement blind hiring techniques, structured interviews, and diverse interview panels to reduce bias.

When we talk about diversity and continuity in leadership, we often focus on tangible elements like recruitment strategies, mentorship programs, and succession planning. But what about the intangible factor that serves as the glue holding all these elements together - psychological safety, and I think that's the cornerstone of both diversity and continuity in any leadership pipeline. An organizational culture that promotes psychological safety is more likely to retain diverse talent and ensure a smooth transition in leadership roles, or any role for that matter.

Check your job advertisements! Typically we recycle and reuse previous versions from decades ago, and this can result in exclusive language being used, for example, applicants must have at least 5-years experience may actively discourage younger people from applying. Also consider the routes to advertise, some roles find more success through social media, whilst others see an increase in applications from specialist recruitment agencies. Its important to utilise the most appropriate route based on candidate interface, which may not necessarily align with how the company currently or previously approached its talent acquisition strategy.
