Aging oil and gas facilities are in dire need of technology upgrades. How do you manage with limited budgets?

Managing limited budgets while upgrading aging oil and gas facilities requires strategic planning and innovative solutions. Consider these approaches:

  • Prioritize critical systems: Focus on upgrading the most essential systems first to ensure safety and efficiency.

  • Leverage government grants: Research and apply for grants or subsidies available for technological advancements.

  • Adopt phased implementation: Spread the costs over time by upgrading in stages rather than all at once.

What strategies have worked for you in managing budget constraints?

Choosing the proper technology might be a challange for marginal field. most of the time we have to make decision to go with existing "best practices" to operate within economic limit but on the same time technology also helping us to unlock hidden barrels. selective investment on technology based on cost benefit analysis must be performed to ensure the investment will bring profit.

The aging oil and gas facilities need a technology upgrade depending on the operational efficiency of the developed field and potential with which our wells operates. It all depends on the value it creates post development and how it aids in recovering the CAPEX spent on development. Micro level Economics needs to be considered and risk assessment also needs to be carried out as this operation honours the energy security of the nation.

Aging production facilities are typically accompanied by declining reserves and pressure. Therefore, the production facilities only need to maintain the pipe thickness in accordance with the current operating pressure. To reinforce the sections of pipes that have become thin, wrapping can be applied to extend the design life in accordance with the remaining production reserves, eliminating the need to replace the pipes with new ones. The pressure gauge at certain points can be replaced with a digital system, allowing real-time monitoring to ensure production flow rate & integrity well monitoring.

Managing aging oil and gas facilities on a limited budget starts with prioritization—focus on critical systems where risk extends beyond equipment to business impact. In my experience, risk assessment isn’t just about the facility; it’s about understanding how downtime or failure affects revenue and operations. Some take a geographic approach, while others focus on specific business lines to minimize financial disruption. Regardless, agility is key. A systematic plan with adaptability ensures upgrades happen strategically and efficiently. Whether phased implementation or leveraging available grants, a detailed, flexible approach balances safety, efficiency, and budget constraints effectively.

If budgets are tight for upgrading old oil and gas facilities, focus on critical systems affecting safety and operations. Use predictive maintenance and OEM-recommended schedules to extend equipment life. Negotiate with suppliers or buy in bulk to cut costs. Invest in affordable tech like IoT to improve efficiency and streamline upgrades. Collaborate with companies or stakeholders through associations to share costs and ideas. Design upgrades to meet current needs while being future-proof, minimizing repeat expenses.
