Often Mistakes and blame is an outward expression of an underlying resentment. The first step - Understand an individual's perspective: The team leader can understand what perspective the individual carries of his/her team members to understand where such knots lie. The second step - Aid in self reflection.: Conducting a self reflection activity with the team will help members look inward and identify even their own shortcomings. This will help them be emphatic and forgiving towards others actions. Third step: promote self- corrective actions. Rather than trying to correct others, the members can think what best they do in their capabilities. The fourth Step: the team lead should ensure equal responsibility is given to solve the problem.

For such situations it is extremely important to create a safe environment, where people do not feel threatened if they admit their mistakes and share the lessons learnt. An open environment will always promote collaborative problem solving and allow people to focus on the problem rather than focusing on who did what. Secondly, trust among team members is the key to avoiding such blame game. Trust could be developed by conducting team building activities, aligning team members with the vision for their work and emphasizing the importance of sharing lessons learnt with everyone to solve problems collectively and improve as a team.
