When students see their world reflected in the material, they become more invested. I also consider different learning styles and backgrounds, ensuring that activities cater to a diverse range of needs. Engagement starts with connection, and that begins with knowing who is in the room and what drives them.

As I approach 20 years of teaching college English, I'm just now beginning to struggle with student engagement. I recently recognized that I have ZERO pop culture references to connect with my students...music, movies, social media, or otherwise. While I feel like I recognize my audience, I want to do better at showing interest in their interests. This semester, for example, I created a Spotify playlist of students' "current jams" to listen to during freewriting.

Try handing your students the reins. Allowing them to lead a discussion or even guide part of the lesson can foster ownership and rekindle their interest. Pause and ask openly, "What’s not working?" or "How can we adjust to meet everyone's needs?" Their feedback might reveal obstacles or inspire new approaches you hadn’t considered. Creating a collaborative environment where they feel heard and valued can shift the dynamic entirely. Sometimes, just stopping to seek their guidance and making changes based on their input can truly make all the difference.

If lectures are necessary, I break them up with interactive activities. Even small changes, like moving around the room, incorporating multimedia, or introducing a challenge, can make a difference. I pay attention to when energy levels drop and adjust accordingly. The key is to keep students on their toes, not in a way that overwhelms them but in a way that keeps curiosity and anticipation alive.

Switching up the rhythm of a lesson can do wonders. When students fall into a passive routine, their minds wander. A change of pace – whether through movement, interactive tasks, or unexpected challenges – reawakens their curiosity. It signals that learning is not static, but alive. How do you refresh the energy in your classroom when things feel stagnant?

Rather than presenting information, build experiences—discussions about contemporary problems, acting out scenarios that actually exist, or applying real issues to be solved. Invite students to question, "Why does this matter?" As they understand that knowledge is an instrument, and not simply something required of them, curiosity emerges and actual learning sets in.

Students engage more when they see the relevance of what they’re learning. I find ways to tie content to their daily lives, current events, or future aspirations. Whether it’s using real-world examples, bringing in guest speakers, or discussing how skills apply beyond the classroom, I make learning feel purposeful. When students recognize that what they’re studying has practical value, they naturally become more interested. The goal is to bridge the gap between theory and reality, making the material feel less abstract and more connected to their world.

When I taught marketing and advertising, it helped to bring in current examples for the students to discuss. I'd spend time making sure that the example tied directly to the class content - keeping up with concepts already learnt - but that it piqued their imagination. The beauty of this was that there really isn't a right answer - every few classes, the students would have the opportunity to engage in a lively discussion and appreciate how different perspectives can change a narrative, especially when it comes to how consumers perceive an ad or a marketing campaign. It was fun for me as the teacher too. I learnt a lot from my students during those sessions.

Giving students autonomy fosters deeper engagement. I incorporate choice whenever possible, whether in project topics, formats for demonstrating understanding, or group roles. When they have ownership over their learning, they invest more effort. I also encourage them to take the lead in discussions, present ideas, and collaborate in decision-making. By shifting from a top-down approach to a more participatory one, I see greater enthusiasm and motivation. When students feel like active contributors rather than passive recipients, their engagement naturally increases.

Get wild and let the students teach you! As a music educator I might have the students do a presentation on their favorite female musical artist. It might spark a few discussions and when all the students have presented it's possible that you could link/compare/contrast the struggles and/or musical processes of the 21st century with those of musicians of another era. You could start in the 20th century with someone like Ella Fitzgerald and take it way back to someone like Hildegard or Clara Schumann. Don't stop being innovative. Keep looking for new ways to inspire!

Engagement isn’t a one-time fix but an ongoing process. I regularly assess what’s working and where adjustments are needed. If an approach isn’t yielding the expected response, I rethink and refine it. Reflection isn’t just personal; I also involve students in evaluating how they learn best. This cycle of testing, analyzing, and adjusting helps keep things fresh and effective. No single strategy works for every group or moment, so staying flexible and open to change is essential. Engagement thrives in an environment where both students and educators evolve together.
