Your new game is under pressure for aggressive monetization. How do you keep players engaged?

Balancing monetization with player engagement is crucial to maintaining a loyal user base in the gaming industry. Here are some strategies to keep players hooked while monetizing your game:

  • Offer value in purchases: Ensure that in-game purchases provide real benefits, enhancing the gaming experience rather than just being cosmetic.

  • Implement fair play mechanics: Avoid pay-to-win scenarios by balancing the game so that free players can still compete.

  • Engage with the community: Regularly interact with players through forums and social media to gather feedback and show that you value their opinions.

Under high monetization pressure, focus on balancing gameplay enjoyment, F2P payback, and revenue goals. Avoid compromising the user experience, as alienating players will shrink your audience and worsen the pressure to sustain income. Stay connected with your community and navigate the needs of both stakeholders and players to maintain long-term success.

I focus on creating a great core experience first - gameplay that’s fun and rewarding without feeling like a paywall. Monetization needs to feel fair, so I offer optional purchases like cosmetics or convenience items that enhance the experience without giving paying players an unfair edge. Transparent communication about pricing and updates builds trust. I also listen closely to player feedback, adjusting where needed to ensure they feel valued. Engagement thrives when players see a game that respects both their time and their wallets.

There are great ways to monetize the game via battle pass, ads for power/rewards unlock unlocks and even in game currency spend for repeating an activity. Having core features set up to operate this way can ensure the game is monetized correctly without having the need to force ads at every level completion which can lead to negative player experience. Another alternative is to provide rewards for connecting socials to the game! or even referring friends. example: Log into to Facebook and earn 2000 coins!

The safer and more long-term strategy for monetisation is to rather extend group of monetised users rather than aggressively "squeeze" small % of users. It is better create the experience that motivates users to spend a little for long time rather than a lot for very short time. Once you look at the monetisation from that perspective is it easier to create good balance between user's happiness and successful monetisation. One of the most often reason for churn and leaving the game is exactly the feeling of being pushed for payments, feeling "pay to win" experience.

I’d prioritize creating a rewarding core gameplay experience that’s fun without feeling paywalled. Monetization should enhance, not hinder, the player journey - I’d focus on optional purchases like cosmetics or convenience items. Fairness is key, avoiding pay-to-win mechanics that alienate players. Regularly engaging with the community through feedback channels ensures monetization stays aligned with their expectations. Rewarding engagement with free content or in-game achievements builds loyalty, proving that player satisfaction remains the priority.
