In being involved in costly litigation over delays and cost overruns over many years, one can see mistakes that continually get repeated and end up causing problems. Old fashioned principles work the best. These are simple to state but difficult to follow. First, be honest with your contractual counter parties and employees if there is a problem. Secondly, have the difficult conversations. Thirdly, work towards collaborative solutions. Do not try to shift a loss to some other party. Fourthly, commit things to writing and have an accurate written record. Fifthly, be strict about rooting out incompetent or lazy behaviour in your own organisation. Finally, be honourable and try to do the right thing
