The primary benefit of the DMAIC methodology is that it provides standard work for problem solving. This ensures that appropriate tools are being used to analyze good data to achieve concrete improvements that can be sustained through the appropriate control, meaning that you only solve a problem once. The challenge is to front load the process by investing proper time and resource in achieving an accurate problem definition, ensuring that the measurement (data) system is effective, and then using that information to validate the objectives of the improvement effort. The potential for an organization is implementing systems of measurement and analysis, reducing improvement cycle time by leaning out the define and measure phases.

Like any other methodology, DMAIC is not a silver bullet to solve all your problems. One of the critical step is to identify and apply the right methodology based on the problem we are addressing upon. DMAIC is a great tool but applying DMAIC for each and every problem will result in wasting both time and effort and ultimately we may end up loosing trust in such great tools as well.

In my experience DMAIC is 1 of many tools, but you can argue it is a bit like fire fighting after the event started. I would rather use APQP thoroughly at the start of any new project or mod to ensure we get everything RFT before we press the button and ensure we and the suppliers have considered any and all potential pitfalls. Why: It costs less to ensure RFT than it does all the other tools and ensure our Customers confidence in us and our future relationships we want to develop and help us grow and need to employ more people and reduce costs to our nation also
