Appreciation, as it is mentioned is what I feel is the driving force for volunteers. Another thing is to provide them some proof of work that can enhance their profile. Encouraging them with expanding their networks by introducing industry leaders and experts will help them learn and will keep motivated. Opening up new opportunities or at least making them aware of those will help them to keep up with the good work.

The selection phase is the most critical factor; selecting proper candidates will play a crucial role in their long-term engagement and self-motivation. Something that worked with me in the past is the repeated reminder of the value of their contribution on a moral level (reminding them of why they wanted to do this in the first place, what the moral benefits, connecting with their hearts & souls )
