Once you understand why the other person disagrees, you can find a solution that addresses their concerns rather than simply responding to them. This approach not only relieves tension but also builds trust.

Listen first, not to answer their question or to prove a point. Listen to elevate your game. This is not so much about design, its more about goals, fears or the business impact delivered via design. Try to understand what each stakeholder is feeling and is concerned about. Instead of defending the design, try to find a common ground, which will help you settle the "how" and aligning the "why".

I use the rule of being able to back design decisions with empirical data. Why choose this color? Why this layout? Why this typeface? Sometimes solid reasoning can be the only thing that will convince a client or stakeholder to move in a direction.
