Start by engaging in a constructive conversation to identify the specific concerns, whether they involve cost, feasibility, or technical limitations. Present the long-term benefits of energy efficiency, such as reduced operational costs and environmental impact, and explore alternative solutions that address both performance and sustainability. Collaborate to find a balance by considering energy-efficient technologies, design adjustments, or phased implementation. If necessary, involve other experts or stakeholders to find compromises that support both functional requirements and energy goals, ensuring the final design aligns with the sustainability vision.

Communicating transparently with stakeholders is essential when navigating challenges. To this end, it is important to involve clients early by informing them about specific issues and presenting potential solutions that will meet their expectations. Simultaneously, update your team on decisions and progress to maintain consistency and commitment. This approach fosters trust and collaboration and ensures all stakeholders remain aligned.

The key is defining clear energy performance targets in the design brief. Depending on the engineering discipline, energy efficiency standards might be readily available - for example, building MEP design can be directly referred to ASHRAE Standard 90.1 (or local equivalent). If the engineering discipline in question has no recognized energy efficiency standards available, then the design brief shall list particular metrics depending on the system or product designed. Do not limit the KPIs to final energy performance benchmarking only, because this can be only verified after the design is completed and the system built, i.e. too late for revisions. Instead use metrics that can be verified early during design stage.

Balancing energy efficiency with aesthetics can sometimes be a challenge, but it’s definitely possible with an open-minded approach. Materials like mineral surfaces, sintered stone, porcelain slabs, and ultra-compact surfaces are excellent examples of innovative products that offer both sustainability and design flexibility. These materials have specific properties that help regulate temperature and reflect sunlight, making them even more suitable for sustainable design. Pairing them with other solutions will surely help find a great option that addresses both engineering and energy efficiency concerns.
