In my experience, agile and structured process and meetings helps mitigate its impacts. So, at first I'd take a look at the team process and meeting structures. Methodologies like Scrum and Kanban gives the opportunity of every team member to display their work and efforts to the entire team. As a lead/scrum master, make sure to always praise your colleagues on their achievments and good work. If your peer still feels ignored, it might come to him having a hard time highlighting his results. Then we can apply a 1-on-1 meeting with him to discuss how he can display his results on a better way during meetings. A good advice would be to help him identify, produce, and share metrics related to his results.

By managing virtual teams, I strongly believe that regular check-ins and retrospectives help on making that team members feel heard. I emphasize recognizing achievements in alignment with team goals, so everyone is able to see the impact of their work. I also focus on customized feedback, balancing recognition for both small wins and long-term contributions. Encouraging cross-functional collaboration strengthens team connections, making everyone feel valued and that they are part of the bigger picture.

To make a virtual team member feel valued, publicly recognise their efforts during team meetings and in written messages. Provide detailed and positive feedback on their efforts. Involve them in decision-making processes and seek their feedback on crucial initiatives. Provide possibilities for professional development and career advancement. Set up regular check-ins to discuss their progress and handle any issues. Show your thanks with personalised acknowledgement, such as awards or shout-outs. By creating a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, you can guarantee that every team member feels valued and respected.

With over 50% of our team working remotely, we know how important it is to make everyone feel valued—no one should feel like they’re working in the background. Regular recognition goes a long way, whether it’s a shoutout in a team meeting, a simple thank-you message, or highlighting achievements in company updates. Clear communication is key too—ensuring remote team members are heard, involved in decisions, and given opportunities for growth. Feeling valued isn’t just about rewards; it’s about knowing your contributions matter, no matter where you’re working from.

When a member of a virtual team feels that his efforts are being ignored, it can quickly escalate into a tense conflict that undermines the motivation and effectiveness of the entire group. The involvement of a mediator allows participants the opportunity to express emotions and direct them in a constructive way. An experienced mediator helps to get rid of objective problems, create a space for an open dialogue and restore trusting communication. The virtual environment increases the risks of misunderstanding. A quick resolution of the conflict is critical to maintaining the productivity of the team. The feeling of value and recognition returns when the voice of each participant is heard, and the contribution is noticed and recognized.
