How can you build a culture of philanthropy within your organization on a limited budget?

It costs nothing to be kind and to lead by example. That alone is a culture people want to be part of. Authentic leadership that genuinely cares for the team and appreciates the support it receives to fulfill its mission is the key.

I think the bigger need here is leadership and intention to develop this type of culture. It’s about small moves and needs to start with thoughtful leadership.

A client once asked what people mean by "culture of philanthropy." and we soon agreed to file it under fundraising jargon as one of those terms that gets used a lot, but says very little. So I wouldn't necessarily call it a "culture of philanthropy," but I think it's essential to make philanthropy part of any organization's culture. This means saving space for it on agendas and reports at every level, ensuring people understand the role that philanthropy plays in the work that you do. Organization-wide involvement in celebrating gifts, stewarding donors, and identifying prospects. This isn't a budget item, but it does call for communication, collaboration and making fundraising a shared responsibility regardless of development staff size.

By emphasizing shared values, encouraging employee volunteerism, leveraging social media for cause awareness, and seeking partnerships with local community organizations to amplify impact.

The professional body of evidence tells us that in the long run a professional fundraiser will be more effective (retain donors and engage leadership) in the long term if there is leadership buy in and understanding of what comprises a culture of philanthropy. Cynthia Gibson’s work in this field is a touch stone for me, complete with role descriptors and KPIs. I have been considering of late if substituting the phrase “a culture of generosity” may be a more inclusive and accessible term to use in our diverse workplaces. I would be grateful to hear from colleagues about this.

Providing 2-3 key talking points, a social media post template, the donate page link, etc. to the team can make it easier for the team to support the organization but also reiterate their individual role and responsibility to the organization. Offering matching gifts for employee charitable giving and PTO for employee volunteerism or Board service to support their outside charitable interests is also a way to build a culture of philanthropy and encourage a philanthropic mindset among the team. No matter what resources are provided internally, the Board and senior leadership should set the tone and lead by example. Leadership should be “walking the talk” by donating and volunteering to the organization and others in the community.

Talk to everyone about your overall purpose, vision and mission, and how activities people choose to do can contribute to that. Take the time to talk to people and give them information to help them understand. And support people and celebrate their achievements.

Give your employees PTO to do volunteer work. This could be set up by giving them X hours a month or X days a year to take paid time off to volunteer. They can submit a brief report, photos, or a letter from the org demonstrating their participation if "proof" of volunteer work is needed.

The first and foremost people to carry your mission is yourself, i mean you and your team, if you don't believe in it then no one will believe. Talk with your team again and again and again until they feel it like you feel it. That way you will move like one big block and nothing can stop you.

The old saying, "many hands make light work" rings true when it comes to fundraising. Being transparent with your team about how and why you are fundraising is imperative to overall success. Everyone, whether it is fellow staff, members of your board, volunteers, or existing partners, come to the table with their own diverse network. Giving them the "how and why" gives them the initial tools to bring their network into the fold. Even if they aren't comfortable soliciting the donations themselves, if they can set the stage and make the introduction, you'll be starting a new connection with the ice already broken. At the end of the day, don't forget to recognize those efforts with a simple word of thanks or a gesture of your appreciation.

Foster philanthropy through stewardship with both personalized and public acknowledgement. Donors want to know that their gift - no matter the size - is valued, needed, and appreciated. "Good 'ole-fashioned" phone calls made promptly to the donor, and personalized thank you letters and notes demonstrate that each gift and each dollar is needed and valued. When people donate, it's vital to let them know that their generosity mattered in fulfilling your organization's mission. For larger gifts, public acknowledgement in a newsletter or social media can reinforce the donor's decision, while inspiring confidence in others considering similar or larger gifts. Phone calls, letters, e-mails, and social media cost nothing!

Plan out a consistent stewardship plan that you can successfully implement with the resources you have. The key is to be consistent and to match what you have defined philanthropy to be and mean in your organisation. For example, if your current focus is to increase the number of volunteers in your organisation then make sure volunteering is mentioned in your culture of philanthropy definition. Then plan at least an annual thank you event for your volunteers to give them the opportunity to come together and for the organisation to celebrate and acknowledge their contributions and the impacts.

It's vital relationships with key donors are always kept in good order communicating, engaging and recognising the importance of this partnership is always healthy for both parties, not only to foster good relations but to realise both have important functions in the relationship.

The biggest challenge is to create an atmosphere of trust among donor, organization and beneficiaries. This is the right of donor to evalute the agency and beneficiaries. On other hand this is entire responsibility of organization to adopt the transparency and right utilization of funding to create a trustworthiness.

Being available and always answering the phone, emails and messages shows a high level of regard for others. We used to be gauged on a “two ring pickup” meaning, management could see how the team is performing with promptness. That might seem to be a little much but I can’t over emphasize how important all of the details matter with how we engage our donors both with speed and efficiency.

Here is where stories are created, beneficiaries. In the business of non for profit, your customers are your beneficiaries therefore they must appear as heros in your brand Storytelling. If they feel like heros they will be your ambassador and likely to be future donors or alumni

When I worked in a small office, I joined a professional development organization which introduced me to people doing my job at different offices across the state. It proved to be a lifeline to share and brainstorm ideas. Now that I am at a larger office, this network is still invaluable to me professionally and personally. We still share ideas and contacts, but it has also provided leadership opportunities and friendship. If something like that doesn't exist for your region or profession, create it!

Well, building networks is essential to learn, find people of like mind, similar interests, share information and ideas. To Understand what is out there, who, what, where?? it's great to fish for opportunities and gives you the chance to seek out new people to work with.

Develop deep relationships with your all members of your organisation's community, including donors, alumni, staff, beneficiaries, and the local community for place-based causes. With trusted members of this community ask them what their experience of philanthropy is in your organisation. This can be done formally or informally. It doesn't have to be a big budget formal survey. Closing out a follow up or check in meeting, ask permission to ask. Take the time (make the time) to work with your internal team and face what is working and what is not working. For the latter, it may only need to be shifted slightly to improve. Making sure you are basing success on what you are seeking to achieve specifically in philanthropy at this time.

Building a culture of philanthropy can look many different ways and target different audiences. For example, when trying to do this work within your organization it’s important to start from the top down. Focus on the Board of Directors and be sure to talk to them about ALL the ways they can give and be a part of fundraising so they can find what works for them vs. fulfilling a mandate (which can be inequitable). Many times 100% board giving makes it easier to talk to staff about being donors as well. We know this can be difficult for many financially (and should by no means be a requirement). This group should be provided various opportunities/ways to give which would encourage a personal philanthropic interest in the org’s work.

Philanthropy is defined as "love for humanity". As nonprofit leaders, we must lead by example and show love to our own teams. What does this look like? -Inclusion: seeking input from all team members for major organization decisions -Trust: Creating flexibility for where team members work- as long as it's done to the required degree of excellence -Safety: Creating psychologically safe spaces for authentic conversations -Culture: Prioritizing team culture--with a focus on leading equitably, respecting one another, and holding each other accountable -Intentionality: Being intentional about recognizing, naming, and ending systemic racism--starting with your organization

Fundraising means change. Adopting a fundraising culture requires your organisation to accept change, and the courage to invite new stakeholders to your table. This isn't always easy in a world where risk and uncertainty are high. So having the leadership informed and united is key. Often there is a phase where leaders want to take individual ownership of Fundraising but they need to realise that this is ownership of a culture of change and risk. But these risks can be mitigated by looking at the evidence you have for what works and growing the resources required to enable Fundraising to happen. Reputable income generation is the goal so talking about a Fundraising culture is useful, but it must lead swiftly to income.
