After years leading corporate philanthropy and impact investing, I've learned shifting traditional power dynamics will lead to true community impact. Sustained social impact starts with humility and deep listening: - Expertise can come from varying places: Valuable insights often come from those on the ground. - Reach out: Seek out trusted business and community leaders who can speak candidly and share perspectives openly. - Look for strategic partners: Sustained impact often requires community partnership building; thus, a more collective and informed decision-making.

Balancing power dynamics in philanthropy means genuinely listening and creating space for all voices—not just those with the funding. When we shift the focus to shared goals and let communities lead the conversation, projects are more likely to benefit everyone involved. I often talk about this in The Essential Fundraiser’s Handbook because it’s key to meaningful, lasting impact. True change happens when everyone, donors and communities alike, feels ownership in the work we’re doing together.

One major takeaway I've gathered over my years leading in philanthropy is the critical importance of effective communication and genuinely understanding the community you wish to assist. This connection with the community forms the bedrock of impactful philanthropic leadership. This approach is so much more meaningful than merely making decisions based on your own beliefs or assumptions, which might, unintentionally, cause harm to the very community you want to uplift. At the heart of successful philanthropy is the commitment to prioritize the community, ensuring that your efforts are genuinely beneficial to the people you aim to help and uplift.

Transform stakeholders' roles from participants to co-owners of the initiative by empowering local communities or marginalized groups to co-design, implement, & evaluate projects. Transfer decision-making authority, not just consulting them. Unequal power dynamics often stem from disparities in knowledge, skills, or resources. Prioritize equipping underrepresented stakeholders w/the tools, expertise, & confidence to engage on equal footing. When communities are empowered to advocate for their needs, the power imbalance diminishes organically. Decisions should be made using intersectional lenses: economic, social, cultural, & environmental. Use frameworks like 'participatory budgeting' to let stakeholders directly control funding allocation.
