Nine companies including Vodafone that collectively operate fixed networks serving around 240m customers across 27 EU Member States have published an open statement arguing why Europe should not disrupt investor confidence in fixed markets.   The companies express alarm that the European Commission is proposing to relax regulation on former fixed monopolies and argue that the Commission’s proposals are a backwards step. The statement notes that the deregulation of wholesale access would lead to re-monopolisation, stifling competition and investment in fixed connectivity services, particularly during the migration from copper to fibre.   The companies argue that this would result in a less competitive investment case for fixed telecoms in Europe, stranding billions of euros committed by the private sector and reducing investor sentiment. The proposals would further suppress future take up of services by consumers and businesses, inhibit network innovation, and make it more challenging for Europe to achieve its Digital Decade 2030 targets.   Long-term investment in fibre networks depends on regulatory certainty. That’s why the companies have today called on the Commission to work closely with industry and national regulators to ensure that the regulatory framework continues to support both investment and competition for all players. Together with AST SpaceMobile, we will be opening the headquarters of our joint venture satellite company, SatCo, in Luxembourg. SatCo will build a pan-European network of ground stations, providing seamless integration with existing 4G/5G terrestrial networks, meaning users will be able to switch automatically between space and land-based networks. This innovative solution will offer secure and resilient digital communications infrastructure, even in the most remote locations.
