Simpsons Malt is a family-owned, B Corp maltster supplying quality malt to the brewing, distilling and food industries.

About us

Simpsons Malt Limited was established by J.P. Simpson in Alnwick, Northumberland, back in 1862. It has remained a family-owned and run business throughout its history and has stayed truly independent in what is an ever-changing market place. Our customers predominantly use our malted products in the production of beer, whisky and food products and are based both in the UK and abroad. We have supplied malt to companies in more than 35 countries over the last 20 years. We prefer to source our raw materials from the UK, of which malting barley is the most common. We established our own merchanting company, McCreath Simpson in 1980, which became McCreath, Simpson & Prentice (MSP) in 1982. As a result, through MSP we are able to procure the majority of our raw material requirements each year.

  • Spring Barley Development Site Tours 🌾 Last week, we were delighted to welcome around 100 contracted spring barley growers to our Spring Barley Development Sites near Portsoy and Laurencekirk on back-to-back days – and just in time before the combines started rolling! 🚜 These events provided us with an excellent opportunity to catch up with growers ahead of harvest and showcase how new, up-and-coming spring barley varieties that could be approved for use for harvest 2026 are performing in the field against current market leaders such as Laureate, LG Diablo and Firefoxx 🔝 Growers were also able to view varieties in the trial plots – including those from leading plant breeders such as Syngenta, KWS Group and LIMAGRAIN EUROPE – that are considerably further away from being grown commercially, highlighting our commitment to outlining and promoting varieties that will deliver for both growers and our end user customers in the distilling industry. In fact, a day after the Laurencekirk event for growers, we welcomed representatives from Chivas Brothers to the trials site (pic 20 📸) A big thank you to all growers who attended across the two days, to the farms hosting the trials – Seafield Estate and DM Carnegie – to our trials contractor Trials Force and to both Keith Country Show and 9th Angus (1st Brechin) Scout Group for the hire of marquees and wonderful catering 🍔 #supplychain #simpsonsmalt #msp #springbarley #maltingbarley #barley

  • Earlier this week, we welcomed mentees from the Women In Beer UK Mentorship Programme - which we are proud to support - to sunny Northumberland ☀️ First up, the group visited our spring barley variety trials site at Beal Farm, where Technical Officer Rosie Hamilton provided an insight into UK barley, including why the UK lends itself to producing high-quality barley and how varieties are selected for malting 🌾 The mentees then visited our Tweed Valley Maltings for a site tour to learn more about the malt production process, before finishing off the day at The Curfew Micropub! • Combines are rollin' 🌾 Not around our Tweed Valley Maltings quite yet, but near our Tivetshall Maltings harvest has kicked off - so what's the verdict in these early stages? 🤔 For the first time in our regular barley updates, Southern Supply Chain Manager Rob Austin joins regular contributor David Cairns to give you and indication of how this year's barley crop is looking in both the north and south of the UK ↕ Watch the full video: https://lnkd.in/edmmYvmu #barley #maltingbarley #springbarley #winterbarley #norfolk #suffolk #northumberland #harvest25 #harvest2025

  • This time last week... 🔙 Brewers from eight UK breweries joined us in East Anglia last week to gain a greater understanding of how UK malting barley is grown and the benefits of our direct-to-farm supply chain and how it works in practice 🌾 Our Southern Supply Chain Manager, Rob Austin, pulled together a nice little itinerary visiting two farms he deals directly with. First up was a trip to Barton Place Farm near Bury St Edmunds, where grower Ellie Hay shared an update on their spring barley crop as well as other initiatives the farm does, including cover cropping 🌱 After that, it was a drive north to a field near our Fersfield Grain Store to see some winter barley, which is nearing harvest and is used in the production of crystal and roasted malts in our Roast House 🔥 A short drive then took the brewers to our Tivetshall Maltings, where they had lunch, listened to a market update and enjoyed a site tour led by Production Manager Dan Cooper. As has become customary with our site visits, the day then finished off with beers at Ampersand Brew Co. 🍺 A big thank you to the brewers who joined us and the growers who kindly accommodated us on the day 🙌 #barley #winterbarley #springbarley #supplychain #beer #craftbeer #malt Beavertown Brewery Attic Brew Co. • Winter barley harvest 🔜🌾 A warm spell of weather has helped the winter barley in East Anglia - the region around our Tivetshall Maltings - race on with harvest expected to begin within the next couple of weeks, with these photographs captured a few days ago 🚜 We use winter barley for the production of our crystal and roasted malts in our Roast House at Tivetshall, using only malting-grade varieties approved by the MAGB and contracting it all directly with regional growers 🤝 #winterbarley #barley #harvest25 #harvest2025

  • Some important tariff news... 🗣️ The recent tariff changes in the USA are affecting imported brewing ingredients, but we’re working with our distributor RahrBSG – a fellow multi-generation, family-owned business – to ensure that the impact on US brewers that use our malts is kept to a minimum. Together, we’re absorbing the current 10% tariff on our malts until the end of 2025 to help maintain price stability and better support brewers during this uncertain period. RahrBSG has been a trusted distribution partner of ours in North America for more than 20 years now, sharing our passion for building and maintaining long-term relationships with users of our high-quality malts. We’d like to place on record our thanks to RahrBSG for their cooperation while the full impact of the tariffs became clear, and to all brewers in the US – and more widely North America – who continue to purchase our products through RahrBSG. If you’d like to find out more information, RahrBSG has put together this handy FAQs document which you can read here 👉 https://lnkd.in/emxNRk3Y
