Our Q2 results are here. Our copper equivalent production rose compared to the same period last year and our Pilbara iron ore operations achieved its highest Q2 production since 2018. “We delivered excellent operational performance from our mine operations with record production from our bauxite business and from Oyu Tolgoi as it ramps up to become the world’s fourth largest copper mine before the end of the decade,” our Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm said. “We continue to make strong progress in our production and growth projects, achieving our highest Pilbara Q2 production since 2018 and accelerating the first shipment from the Simandou high-grade iron ore project in Guinea.” #FindingBetterWays #results

Our upstream recycling initiative is helping shape the future of sustainable aluminium through a new partnership with Capral Aluminium and Sims Metal. Through this partnership: 1. Capral will supply its scrap aluminium to SIMS Metal. 2. SIMS Metal will sort the scrap and select the ones with the right purity and clarity. 3. We’ll then produce 1,000 tonnes of aluminium billet containing at least 20% recycled content, to be supplied back to Capral for use in its extrusion operations. Nathan, Metal Products Manager from Boyne Smelters Limited, explains what closed loop recycling is, and why this is an important milestone for aluminium recycling in Australia 📽️ 👇. We’re partnering with Hancock Prospecting to invest $US1.6 billion to develop Hope Downs 2 in the Pilbara, Western Australia. The 2 new above-water-table iron ore pits will have a combined total annual production capacity of 31 million tonnes and will sustain production from the Hope Downs Joint Venture well into the future. Hope Downs 2 is expected to create more than 950 jobs during construction and up to 1,000 jobs once operational. The project will also include: · New non-process infrastructure precincts. · Railway crossings. · Haul roads. · Realigning a 6-kilometre section of the Great Northern Highway. “This project is part of our strategy to continue investing in Australian iron ore and to sustain Pilbara production for decades to come, supporting jobs, local businesses and the state and national economies,” Simon Trott, Chief Executive Iron Ore, said. We engaged with the Nyiyaparli, Banjima and the Ngarlawangga Peoples, along with relevant government stakeholders, to ensure the management of heritage and the environment in development of the project. Ongoing consultation with the Traditional Owners resulted in changes to mine design to avoid significant heritage areas and preserve access to culturally important places. This is one of 5 new mines we’ll develop in the Pilbara over the next 5 years, underpinning our strong commitment to the region. For more: https://lnkd.in/gj7Z8cum #IronOre

"Mining is quite traditional - it uses processes from hundreds of years ago. I don't think that's a bad thing at all. Technology advances so quickly, it’s important to step back and remember how mining used to be done," Sabina, a graduate machine learning developer based at our Montreal Hub, says. "Artificial intelligence (AI) is now essential at shaping more sustainable approaches. When we apply AI to mining using a value-based approach, we can do a lot of good in the industry and for the world. I'm currently working on a machine learning project for our aluminium business. I had the chance to visit one of our aluminium sites. I'll never forget putting on my personal protective equipment on and walking into a pot room...it made me realize just how different the opportunities in mining can be. I love working with the people at Rio. I've learned so much and it's rewarding to deliver a project that fulfills the clients' needs. The graduate program has helped me step outside of my comfort zone to develop my networking skills - it encourages us to think outside of the box, to ask questions and share our perspectives. I've become close with some of the other graduates, especially in Montreal, and I'm very grateful for that." #LIfeAtRioTinto #MiningCareers
