Copilot in SSMS is available in Preview and we are asking SSMS users to provide feedback using a survey.
Since the general availability of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 21 a few weeks ago we’ve had two minor releases and received lots of feedback on the site. First, thanks to those who have followed along as we moved SSMS into the modern age with an improved installation and a host of new features, and to those who have already installed SSMS 21. Second, thanks to those of you that provide constructive feedback, whether through comments or tickets logged. We appreciate you participating in the process of improving SSMS and engaging with us in good faith.
The release of SSMS 21 also included Copilot in SSMS (Preview) – a highly-anticipated feature that we are excited to have publicly available. Internally, we are actively working on the evolution of Copilot in SSMS. We’re also reviewing feedback, comments, and blog posts to understand what landed well, and what didn’t, to determine what should change in our roadmap.
The voices that have been the loudest, thus far, are those who expected Copilot in SSMS to work with their GitHub Copilot license. To be clear, this isn’t a surprise to us, and it is something we evaluated internally. Timing is everything.
As we’ve stated previously, we use comments and votes on our feedback items as currency. The request to support the GitHub Copilot license with Copilot in SSMS is the second highest voted item on the feedback site right now…and based on the comments, most of those folks are developers. We’re also very curious about our non-developers and what you would like to see.
To that end, we’ve created a survey to better understand the audience for Copilot in SSMS, and their priorities. Whether you are currently using Copilot in SSMS, want to use it but cannot, or plan to use it, we want to hear from you. Please complete this survey (https://aka.ms/SSMS-Copilot-Survey), and please share it with your colleagues, your network, your user group members…anyone who has an interest in using Copilot in SSMS. We want to make sure the feedback we're getting represents the wide range of users of SSMS.
Finally, we hope you continue to log feedback on the site, and feel free to comment below if you have general questions. From our side, we commit to sharing a summary of the survey findings, and how that impacts our roadmap for Copilot in SSMS. Stay tuned!
