PACESETTERS in Galway – DONE!👏🚀 It was an incredible journey at the Galway International Arts Festival 2025! From inspiring talks to deeply moving installations, our RWL in Galway brought culture and climate together in powerful ways. Throughout the week, RWL Galway became a creative testbed—where artists, researchers, citizens & institutions came together to explore urban resilience, climate storytelling, and community engagement through sovereign digital tools and collaborative practices. Galway puts culture and climate at the forefront: International arts festival as a climate transition Real World Lab for performative strategies as part of the PACESETTERS project. July 15th, the PACESETTERS project will launch one of its Real-World Lab (RWL) in Galway, marking a key milestone in the project's mission to connect creative practice with climate transformation. For the second year in a row, PACESETTERS hits the Galway International Arts Festival, taking place in the city of Galway in Ireland from 14th to 27th July. On the 15th, Prof. Annela Anger-Kraavi, who leads the Climate Change Policy Group at the University of Cambridge, will share her talk "Where Are We Now?" packed with insights on the current state of play and on what needs to happen next to drive meaningful climate transition. On the 17th, Conor Maloney and John Conneely will present their interactive multimedia art installation "Funeral for Ashes", inviting the audience to come together in this act of reverence that is aimed as a farewell, a celebration, and a heartfelt tribute to the Irish native ecosystem. RWL Galway will serve as a dynamic space of collaboration between artists, researchers, residents, and institutional partners. As a "pop-up lab", it will test new models of cooperation using sovereign digital tools and artistic narratives to explore themes such as urban resilience, climate education, and local civic engagement. This morning, Ekaterina Zaharieva, EU Commissioner for Start-ups, Research and Innovation, hosted a breakfast in the European Parliament for members of the Knowledge and Innovation Community for #Culture and #Creativity. How can the fragmentation of the cultural and creative sectors be turned from a structural weakness into a competitive advantage for #Europe as a whole? This is the question that drives our research in the PACESETTERS Project, and it is great to see it resonating with politicians and high-level policymakers. Here are the key takeaways from a very constructive and encouraging exchange: 🗣️ MEP Christian Ehler highlighted the potential of creativity, which goes far beyond the usual business of embellishment and entertainment. Referring to the EU's STARTS programme, he emphasised that #arts and #culture have many capacities to create innovation, also in other industries. 🗣️ Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva showed her strong commitment to collaborative research in #HorizonEurope Cluster 2: Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society. She encouraged stakeholders in #culture and #creativity to come to her with suggestions on how to improve and further develop existing programmes, create synergies with other programmes such as Creative Europe or #Erasmus+, and increase the #competitiveness of Europe's CCIs. 🗣️ Stefan Dobrev, Chair of the EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology Governing Board, underlined the urgency of scaling up the #impact of culture and creativity for a successful #innovation economy. In summary, the forthcoming three years will present numerous unprecedented opportunities. However, it is equally imperative to establish the necessary conditions to ensure that the success of the EU's investment in arts and culture is sustainable and continues in the 10th Framework Programme.
