The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA is an international organisation with 22 Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. ESA's 22 Member States are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Slovenia, Slovakia, Latvia and Lithuania are Associate Members. Canada takes part in some projects under a cooperation agreement. Five other EU states have Cooperation Agreements with ESA: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Malta.

Between celebrating ESA ECSAT's 10-year anniversary in Oxfordshire and attending the UK Space Conference in Manchester, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher was busy engaging with scientists, researchers, politicians, and ESA workforce contributing to the UK's dynamic and thriving space ecosystem⤵️ #UKSC2025
The UK excels in various industrial, academic, and institutional fields and is notably strong in commercial and economic areas of the space sector, such as telecommunications, downstream applications, and in sustainability and science. Between celebrating ECSAT's 10-year anniversary in Oxfordshire and attending the UK Space Conference in Manchester, I have spent the past few days engaging with scientists, researchers, politicians, and colleagues contributing to the UK's dynamic and thriving space ecosystem. I witnessed two exemplary UK industry leaders in action: Oxford Space Systems, making deployable antennas for space, and Astroscale UK, specialising in in-orbit services, including active debris removal, life extension, end-of-life services, and Space Situational Awareness. Later, I met individually with Lord David Willetts, Minister Sir Chris Bryant MP and Minister Richard Lochhead MSP. We discussed the significance of space for economic growth, security, and strategic autonomy in preparation of #CM25, and how best we can support the UK in this regard. The UK Space Agency and European Space Agency - ESA work together to boost the UK's space ecosystem, which has all the essential elements for success. At the UK Space Conference, I gave a keynote on supercharging the UK’s economy through the space sector. Private investment in space continues to soar, reaching record highs in 2024. European space ventures raised over 1.5 billion euro, marking a 56% increase compared to 2023. In 2024, global private investment in space grew by 20%—to 7 billion euros—compared to 2023. Over the past five years, Europe's share of global private investment in space has grown significantly, from 3% in 2019 to 22% in 2024. However, public investment in space is falling behind. In 2024, Europe captured just 10% of the global public space budget, a decrease of 5% since 2019. Funding gaps also present economic opportunities. Consider ESA’s Biomass mission, a UK-led initiative that allocated over 80 million euros in ESA contracts to ten British companies, supporting about 250 high-skill jobs. Strong public investment is essential for sector growth, enabling ESA to unlock opportunities for Member States to engage in large-scale international missions beyond their individual capabilities. It was a pleasure to discuss this, and later, to engage in a panel with UKSA CEO Paul Bate, where we explored the evolving geopolitical landscape and the heightened focus on using space for European resilience. ESA will work with Member States, the European Commission, and international partners to harness space for the betterment of life on Earth. The decisions made at #CM25 will ensure a more secure and prosperous future for all Europeans, and the UK and its industry will play a significant role in this endeavour. The relationship between ESA and the UK is productive, mutually beneficial, and strategically important. Together, let's elevate the future of space in Europe.

This year marks 10 years since ESA’s European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT), opened its doors at Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire! Since 2015, ECSAT has grown into a thriving hub for innovation, collaboration and discovery. It has helped to power major UK-led projects on everything from space-based climate monitoring and secure satellite communications to Moon missions and in-orbit servicing tech. But that's not all, ECSAT also: 🌍 houses our Climate Office, turning satellite data into real-world action on climate change. 🌑 leads our Moonlight programme, building the infrastructure to support lunar exploration. 🛰️ pioneers spacecraft manufacturing methods, like 3D printing propellant tanks. 🧑🧑🧒🧒 👩🏫 And it’s a public-facing centre for outreach, student innovation, and the UK’s growing space cluster. ...plus much more! Here’s to 10 amazing years—and an even more ambitious future ahead! Discover more ways ECSAT is boosting Europe’s space ambition 👉 https://lnkd.in/dnBnRi99

"We need a stronger Europe. A united, thriving European ecosystem that doesn’t just compete—it inspires. Inspires the next generation of scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and explorers to dream beyond borders and beyond Earth. We already have what it takes: the talent, the scientific legacy, and now, with ESA’s Strategy 2040, we have a roadmap to turn vision into action." As Heriberto Saldivar Massimi, PhD reminded us during his keynote at the European Space Generation Workshop on July 5th, "Space doesn’t reward continuity—it rewards courage. Strategy 2040 isn’t just a technical blueprint. It’s a new European dream—one where Europe leads with purpose, dares boldly, and shapes the future of space for generations to come.” 🌕 On July 4th and 5th, the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) held the European Space Generation Workshop, bringing together over 150 European Young Professionals and students in Toulouse to exchange ideas around the topic: lunar exploration, build networks, and contribute to a sustainable and innovative space future. ESA is proud to be one of the main sponsors of this uplifting event supporting the development of our next generation of space leaders and the origination of innovative ideas. On top of the keynote, ESA also contributed to the program with: 🪐 A panel discussion bringing together Heriberto Saldivar Massimi, PhD, ioana-Roxana PERRIER (IPSA), Alessandro Ruggiero Chiminelli (Thales Alenia Space), Marcos Eduardo Rojas Ramirez (CT Engineering) discussing "The next 50 years of lunar exploration for Europe". 🔭 An interactive session from the ESA Working Group on Building a Lunar Economy, featuring experts Florian Marmuse (ESA) and Francesco Ventre (i-space). 📚 A Masterclass on the History of Space Commercialisation, co-led by Florian Marmuse and Lea Kablitz, offering insights into the development of commercial space and its implications for ESA. Supporting events like E-SGW within SGAC is vital to empower the next generation of space leaders. The future of space in Europe not just depends on technology—but on people with courage, vision, and collaboration. We thank the organizing team of students and Young Professionals under the lead of Clara Moriceau and Tania GRES and are delighted that we have had so many young professionals from ESA involved in the Event (Maria Grulich, Tom Syndercombe, Weronika Dziaduch, Kenza Battaglia, Clara Moriceau, Lea Kablitz, Prève Chobert-Passot, Thijs Christiaens )
