📈 Africa’s trade with the world is evolving fast. According to UNCTAD and Afreximbank, the continent’s total trade exceeded USD 1.3 trillion in 2023, driven by strong ties with key global players including China, the EU, the US, India and the UAE. Africa’s exports remain largely focused on raw materials, while imports increasingly consist of manufactured and capital goods. 📊 The African Credit Rating Agency (#AfCRA) is set to become operational in Q3 2025, following its formal approval in February. Backed by the African Union, AfCRA aims to provide fair and independent credit ratings for African countries, addressing long-standing concerns about the “Africa Premium” linked to biased assessments by the so-called “Big 3” (Fitch Ratings, Moody's Ratings’s, S&P Global Ratings). 🔍 Supporters say these distortions lead to missed funding opportunities and higher borrowing costs across the continent. AfCRA plans to release its first sovereign report by early 2026, and will offer new services like local currency debt ratings. Still, questions remain over its governance and credibility, which may prompt bondholders to continue relying on the Big 3 for the time being. #AfCRA #CreditRatings

🌍 Why are Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries stepping up their investments in Africa? Over the past decade, the six GCC members have become key investors on the continent, diversifying their economies beyond oil and gas. According to African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), they invested over USD 120 billion between 2012 and 2022. Their involvement now goes beyond traditional sectors like energy and infrastructure. In June 2025, the UAE signed a USD 1 billion deal to build Africa’s largest innovation and AI hub in Accra, signalling new areas of partnership. In March 2025, Qatar hosted landmark talks between the presidents of DRC and Rwanda, the first since renewed M23 violence, highlighting its rising diplomatic influence. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait’s support was key to Sidi Ould Tah’s election last month as President of the African Development Bank Group. This raises the question of whether a new strategic chapter is beginning in Gulf-Africa relations.
