I would emphasise that clear, honest communication with your key stakeholders is critical. You want them to continue to respect you as a professional with integrity. Neglecting communication, even if you solve the issue successfully, damages you and your team’s reputation. Once the storm passes look at lessons learned, consider people, process and technology. E.g. people : resource competencies and bandwidth, training needs Process : checklists, controls, assess value and sequencing of tasks. Technology : automation,task management tools etc.

Deadline means a commitment to be fulfilled and missed deadline means that either we are not good enough or we are not doing good enough. Deadline can be managed in the first place with clear communications to all team members. If really missed deadline, responsible ought to be taken with consequences, i.e. bad reputation or else. The thing to do is make the job done. Excuses sometime are not needed in such curcumstances.
