Om os

EWMA is a not-for-profit umbrella organisation linking wound management associations across Europe and a multidisciplinary group bringing together individuals and organisations interested in wound management. The European Wound Management Association (EWMA) was founded in 1991, and the association works to promote the advancement of education and research into native epidemiology, pathology, diagnosis, prevention and management of wounds of all aetiologies. EWMA works to reach its objectives by being an educational resource, organising conferences, contributing to international projects related to wound management, actively supporting the implementation of existing knowledge within wound management and providing information on all aspects of wound management. EWMA objectives and goals: EWMA works continuously to improve European wound patients’ quality of life. We pursue identifying and advocating the highest quality of treatment available and its cost effectiveness from a multidisciplinary point of view. We work to reach our objectives by being an educational resource for health care professionals working with wound care and prevention. We organise conferences, contribute to international projects related to wound management, actively support the implementation of existing knowledge and provide information on all aspects of wound management. Thus, EWMA strives to be the organisation that citizens, patients, professionals, Governments, Health Services and educational institutes come to for advice, expertise and opinion in Europe. • 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗹𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀? A new study in the 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘞𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 looked at how nurse training affects both knowledge and the financial tracking of pressure ulcer care. Czech researchers assessed nurses’ knowledge using the Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Test (PUKT). Before training, scores averaged 74%. After online modules during the pandemic? Still 74%. But once face-to-face training was introduced, scores jumped to 93%. What this tells us: 🔹In-person teaching has a much stronger impact than online-only learning. 🔹Well-educated nurses are better at classifying and reporting pressure ulcers. 🔹This accuracy helps hospitals monitor treatment costs more effectively. 🔹It also supports smarter funding decisions at a national level. Face-to-face education isn’t just about information, it improves care, saves money, and empowers nursing teams. • Can a video game help prevent pressure ulcers? A new study in the Journal of Wound Management explored how a 3D web-based game, PreSore: Pressure Ulcer Prevention Game (PPUPG), can educate patients’ relatives on preventing pressure ulcers. 55 participants tested the game, which simulates caring for a patient at risk of pressure ulcers. They then shared their experiences in interviews. What they said: 🔹The game motivated learning and made them feel more responsible for patient care. 🔹It helped them empathise with real-life caregivers. 🔹They found the content realistic, informative, and engaging. 🔹Many said it was more effective than traditional education. Digital games like PPUPG can be powerful tools in community health education, raising awareness and building practical caregiving skills. • Effective exudate management is central to palliative wound care, contributing to infection prevention, skin protection, and psychological well-being. Excessive or unmanaged exudate can lead to maceration, odour, wound progression and significant distress. Our latest guidance includes recommendations for exudate management such as: 🔹Superabsorbent dressings 🔹Use of ostomy pouches where appropriate 🔹Protection of peri-wound skin with barrier products A structured, compassionate approach to exudate management supports both patient dignity and clinical outcomes. At the conference, 7 e-Poster winners were chosen. This week, we share the work of: 🧠 Kathleen Stevens EP0547: Systematic priority setting of the IWGDF recommendations to inform health policymakers: AQ-methodological study About her research, she says: 💬 'I’m an advanced foot care nurse and Assistant Professor at Memorial University Faculty of Nursing in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. My research focuses on preventative foot health and foot self-management interventions, with a strong emphasis on reducing diabetes-related complications such as skin breakdown, foot ulceration, and amputation. Through my work, I aim to influence health policy, support patient education, and contribute to improved foot health outcomes.   I’m passionate about improving outcomes for individuals at risk and about translating research into practice through knowledge translation initiatives. One of my favourite tools for this is the research poster. I see posters not just as a way to present data, but as a visual canvas—much like a painting—that invites viewers to pause, reflect, and engage. For me, colour choice, clear layout and graphics, concise wording, and thoughtful conclusions are essential in crafting a poster that resonates and communicates effectively.' ____________ Does sharing your research sound interesting? • Malodour is a distressing yet under-assessed symptom in palliative wound care. It affects not only physical comfort but also emotional well-being and social interaction. Despite its significance, only 12% of clinicians assess odour regularly. Our newest EWMA document highlights that odour management must be prioritised as a clinical and psychosocial concern and recommends the following strategies; 🔹Use of topical metronidazole 🔹Application of sealed charcoal dressings 🔹Implementation of non-scented environmental odour control Access the full EWMA Document on Palliative Wound Care edited by Georgina Gethin and Sebastian Probst: https://lnkd.in/dK9UsnNv

  • NEWS FROM THE INDUSTRY - Convatec New report published in the Journal of Wound Care Use of a next-generation multilayered foam dressing in hard-to-heal wounds: a prospective, multicentre study Hard-to-heal wounds present a significant healthcare challenge due to their complex aetiology, impact on quality of life (QoL) and consequent economic burden. Guidelines recommend dressings that provide a moisture-balanced wound healing environment, absorb excess exudate, and protect the periwound skin, in addition to being cost-effective. The aim of this study was to assess the usability, safety, and performance of a next-generation, multilayered foam dressing in the management of indicated hard-to-heal wounds.   The management of indicated hard-to-heal wounds with a next-generation multilayered foam dressing was associated with: 🔹 Clinical progression of wound healing at four weeks 🔹 Complete wound closure in almost 40% of wounds at 12 weeks 🔹 High percentage of healthcare provider and patient satisfaction 🔹 Very low number of dressing-related adverse events   Reference: 1.Ranire-Maguire M et al.
