Overclocking Heatsinks

Setup Instructions
- Attach the display to Bitaxe PCB (skip this step if you purchased with AxeSheath)
- Plug Bitaxe into the included 5V power supply. Please do not plug any non-approved 12V power since that will permanently damage the device.
- Bitaxe will now attempt to connect to a default network, which it will not find. To configure the Bitaxe use a WiFi capable device such as a Phone or Laptop and search for the new WiFi Access point Bitaxe_XXXX. Connect to the Bitaxe SSID and you should be prompted for or redirected to the AxeOS web portal. If this does not happen after you connect to the Bitaxe, open your browser and visit http://192.168.4.1
- When you see the AxeOS web portal click on the ‘settings’ button
- Configure the WiFi SSID and password for your local WiFi network (Note: Bitaxe is not compatible with 5Ghz Wifi, it only works with 2.4Ghz WiFi). Double check your WiFi SSID name and password before entering, to prevent manual recovery later.
- If your device has the primary pool as stratum.kano.is this pool requires users to setup an account and using the account name. You cannot simply change the Bitcoin address. We recommend changing the Stratum URL to ckpool or publicpool for solo mining if you do not wish to setup an account with Kano.
- Click Save, then click restart to apply the changes.
- Done! If everything is configured correctly your Bitaxe will start mining. You can re-visit and reconfigure the Bitaxe on your local network by visiting the IP address displayed on the device. You can also press the ‘boot’ button on the device to enable the WiFi access point and connect to it directly at any time. Pressing the ‘boot’ button again will disable the access point.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you need setup support beyond the available instructions provided, we offer one-on-one setup/consulting services that can be purchased separately from our consulting page. We would be happy to guide you through the process.
No, the Bitaxe does not have an Ethernet port. It cannot be hardwired. It only has Wi-Fi connectivity.
This is a learning device aimed at makers, tinkerers and hardware enthusiasts. Low noise, Wifi Connectivity and the ability to run this without connecting to a computer make it an ideal home miner. Profitability will depend on many factors such as power cost, bitcoin price etc.
Yes it can be overclocked or underclocked. Overclocking voids warranty and you may need additional cooling to do it. Here are some overclocking results for the Bitaxe Ultra from a community member, that you can use as a reference.
The AxeOS user interface allows for limited overclocking. For extreme overclocking, you can manually set frequency and core voltage. Please note that manually entering voltage and frequency is risky and not recommended for new users.
If you are an advanced user and comfortable with the risk, the article here explains the procedure.
If you have v2.6.4 or later you can simply amend the browser address while in the settings tab of AxeOS with an “?oc” as indicated below.
The minimum payout on most bitcoin mining pools is too large for sub petahash mining operations. Bitaxe is better suited for lottery mining for a chance at winning 3.125 BTC block reward on solo mining pools like CKSolopool, Kano Solo Pool and Public Pool. Most larger pools will not credit shares that are less than 1 TH/s.
Your Bitaxe will come with preset pool credentials. The default Primary Stratum Host varies by the manufacturer.
It is important to ensure you change the Stratum User Name upon setup. Or, you will not receive a block reward should the device mine a bock.
Note- the if your primary is KanoPool-Solo the user is required to setup an account and provide a payout address for rewards. Reference the instructions on their website. Or, you can change the default to another pool.
The remaining default pools Solo CKPool and Public Pool do not require. They only require the users BTC Address in the Stratum User field.
The default pool when you receive your device is likely Public Pool Or KanoPool-Solo.
As a user you are free to use any pool you like. You can even create your own pool using software like Start 9 or Umbrel fairly simply.
Not many pools accept low shares which the Bitaxe can only produce. A lists of alternative low share pools a include:
The most common mistakes we see for new users is understanding the Wi-Fi bridging process. The goal of setup is to link a mobile device or PC to the Bitaxe SSID via a Wi-Fi Connection. The user must enter into the Network Settings page of the Bitaxe a compatible 2.4Ghz SSID/Network Name and password. It cannot be a 5Ghz signal. Then, restart the device.
Once a successful connection is made the Bitaxe display will show the IP address on the display as indicated in the setup videos. AxeOS can now be accessed locally over the user’s Wi-Fi by entering the IP address into a web browser.
Common mistakes:
- Incorrect Wi-Fi Credentials
Both SSID and Password. The SSID and Password on Wi-Fi routers are case sensitive. The credentials entered into the Bitaxe Settings page must match exactly. Double check spelling and capital lettering versus lowercase lettering. If there is a space before or after with each field it will cause a problem with connection. This is a very common mistake.
If credentials were entered, the device was restarted but the display shows attempting to connect to the Wi-Fi SSID for more than a few moments, it is likely a password issue. Double check the password.
- Not connecting to a 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi signal
Many routers offer dual band or single band options. If you are having issues with a dual band signal search for a 2.4Ghz signal. Keep in mind the password may be different from the other SSID. Also, a Wi-Fi extender may also have a different SSID and Password.
If you are still experiencing issues after confirming credentials Try a hard reset. Unplug the device, let it sit a few seconds and plug it back in. If it does not connect to Wi-Fi and shows an IP at the bottom of the Bitaxe LED, press the boot button and go through the bridging process again.
We do not recommend anything but solo using a Bitaxe. If you are compelled to pool with other miners you may own. We have tested Braiins, ViaBTC, Antpool, Ocean, Nicehash and Lincoin. In our testing Nicehash & Lincoin did not register any valid hashrate for payout. Again, we only recommend solo mining using the Bitaxe or any other low Terahash Miner such as the Canaan Avalon Nano 3 or any Gekko Science device.
Press the ‘Boot’ button and it will reactivate Bitaxe’s device Wi-Fi. You can then connect to this Wi-Fi network and enter your Wi-Fi credentials.
If this doesn’t work, you can turn off the Wi-Fi network Bitaxe is trying to connect by turning off the Wi-Fi router, to break the reconnection loop.
While the odds of hitting the block lottery on a single chip ASIC miner are low, it happens more often than one might imagine. You can calculate these odds using solochance or sololuck.
Yes, someone mined a BTC block with a Bitaxe device in July 2024.
The display is plugged into the PCB and can come loose. If your display is not working, try pressing it down to see if that helps. You can also try opening the enclosure to re-seat the display.
You can see if you look at the PCB the holes are a little offset in attempt to create a better fit. Sometimes they need a little bending.
We would also recommend if the display feels a little loose you bend the prongs on the back of the screen a little bit in an attempt to snug it up.
If your display still does not work, you can purchase a replacement unit here.
AxeOS V2.7.1 includes a display timeout feature. Users can keep the display on by keeping the default setting of “-1” in the field. If you would like the display off type “0”. If you would like the display to power down in 10 minutes type “10” in the Display Timeout field.
- Gh = Hashing speed in Gigahash

The USB-C port on Bitaxe can not be used to power the device. It can be used to directly communicate with the device. However, since Bitaxe has in-built WiFi, most users will never need to use the USB port.
The three heat related reading in AxeOS include:
- ASIC Temperature – The ASIC are sage up to ~70 C and can throttle up to 75 C. You will likely see an error above 70 C. Keep the temp below this.
- Voltage Regulator Temperature – This is the Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) which is located on the back of the PCB. The VRM can reach 120 C before damage. It is recommended to stay under 80 to 90 C by many users. If you are over-clocking the device consideration should be given to provide additional cooling to the VRM. Many use heat sinks and a second fan.
- Fan Speed – This is reported as a percent of the maximum RPM. Stock fans are usually 7,200 RPM. The default cooling setting is automatically controlled by temperature. It can also be set manually. If you are experiencing heat issues it may be helpful to manually change to 100%.
Here is a good article that takes a deep dive into the topic.
If you have changed the settings it is best to go back to default. If you see the overheat error on the OLED you must first reset overheat mode. Then, reset the frequency and core voltage to the defaults. Here is a video showing how to reset the device. When the device overheats it will no longer display the IP address on the OLED. If you do have the IP address saved you can obtain it directly from your router. If you are unsure how how to do this check out the next FAQ: How do I find my IP address.
If your device keeps overheating even on default freq/voltage settings, you likely have a problem with cooling. Inspect your fan and make sure it’s clean and running normally.
Repasting thermal paste might help with cooling. This however is an advanced procedure and voids warranty. If you decide to repaste the chip we recommend a high quality paste like Kryonaut Thermal Grizzy. The procedure for repasting thermal compound is shown in the video below.
AxeSheath enclosure is made up of 2 sections, that snap fit together. It can be removed by prying the 2 pieces apart. Video below shows how this is done with a pencil.
No, Bitaxe only works with 5V power input. 12V power will permanently damage the device.
We do not manufacture Bitaxe but we source them from various US based manufacturers such as OSM & Gekkoscience. We choose our suppliers carefully and ensure their devices deliver the expected performance.
Most manufacturers follow the reference design which is available at Bitaxe.org
Gekkoscience has a modified design and their source files are available for download here.

Bitaxe can only mine coins that use SHA256d hashing algorithm. This includes BTC, BCH, BSV and a few others.
Download both esp-miner.bin & www.bin files. Make sure the are not renamed. Next, upload both the firmware and web file. Then, restart.
Alternatively, you can update via the USB-C Cable using the Bitaxe Web Flash Tool here. This can be helpful if the unit is not responding via the web user interface. A video describing the process by can be viewed here.
Webflasher allows you to install/update bitaxe firmware. You can also use it to ‘reset’ the device, since installing firmware using web flasher will restore the device to factory settings. There are several videos explaining the process here:
- Bitaxe Resources: Altair Tech Product Listing Page – FAQ, setup instruction & videos https://altairtech.io/product-category/miners/bitaxe/
- Bitaxe main site – https://bitaxe.org/
- Bitaxe Open Source Design Files https://github.com/skot/bitaxe Web Installer – https://wantclue.github.io/bitaxe-web-flasher/

Bitaxes are great learning devices to understand how mining works. If you’re looking level up and increase your hashrate we would highly recommend checking out our Loki Rigs. These are 120V ready, Wifi Enabled , quiet miners ideal for home use. They also double up as space heaters and offer an excellent $/Terahash value at new-gen mining efficiencies. With higher hashrate they also enable mining on a pool with periodic payouts.
This generally happens after installing incorrect firmware or when there’s no firmware on the ESP32. Hold down Boot and press Reset, to enter firmware download mode. Then use bitaxe webflasher to flash the correct firmware on your device.
You do not need to upgrade the heat sink or fan on your Bitaxe. Although typically when upgrading your fan or heat sink it will allow your Bitaxe to run more efficiently. You can find accessories here

Will Golpe (verified owner) –
It was a nice unit and it was easy to set up. However, after the initial set up, I did see that there was more recent official firmware. After updating the firmware, I was unable to get the unit to work appropriately as it would constantly give me a low-voltage message and drop all current going to the asic chip.
I ordered a secondary and a 3rd power supply and oddly enough the 3rd power supply had the same case markings but a different sticker. With both of those power supplies, the unit has been functional. So, my only disappointment is really in the power supply as that prevented the unit from running.

Arrived on time and in excellent conditions. This is my fifth bitaxe gamma, this time with the ice tower, and it’s the best performing one. I’ve placed ice towers, also purchased from Altair, on the other ones, and they’re doing great as well, but the one I got with it pre installed is the one I can overclock the most reaching well over 2 th/s and could probably push it more, but will wait till heat of the incoming summer is gone. Another thing I’d like to point out is that last time they forgot to include an EU plug adapter. For the minor mistake, they gave me a $10 discount coupon, and in the last order they’ve included an extra EU plug adapter. Altair really looks after their customers beyond expectations. Highly professional and highly recommend doing business with them.
